] ! | I ! | , I Deadline Near for Seven Stakes at Empire City Fixtures, With Aggregate Value Of 5,000, Close Friday Night NEW YORK, N. Y., May 13.— President George H. Bull reports that horsemen are piling up a record number of nominations to the seven stakes that will be renewed during the 24-day meeting at Empire City, June 29 through July 25. These stakes will close on Friday, May 15, and, with the deadline drawing near, a last-minute rush of nominations is anticipated. But already the response has been more than up to expectations. Horsemen expressed delight in the fact that Empires stakes boast a vast increase in endowments over last year. The seven fixtures this summer will aggregate 5,000, as against 2,500 in 1941. The Butler, principal feature, as well as the richest of the meeting, which will be renewed on Saturday, July 4, has been increased from 5,000 to 0,000. Whirlaway, Mioland, Challedon and other famous handicap stars are expected to be among the candidates. The Empire City Handicap, exclusively for three-year-olds, to be run on Saturday, July 11, has been tilted to 5,000. It formerly was endowed with 0,000. It is not amiss to say Alsab, the Preakness winner; Shut Out, the Derby winner, and other pretenders to the title, will head the list of nominations to this important event. Another stake that has been increased in value is the Yonkers Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, to be run on Satur: day, July 18. Formerly ,500, it is now a 0,000 prize. The other stakes listed on Empire Citys roster are the Demoiselle, the East View, the Fleetwing and the Wakefield, each endowed with ,000. The Empire City Handicap will be run this year over the mile and three -sixteenths distance. It had been at one mile and a furlong. The East View is now open to two-year-old colts and geldings, while the Wakefield Handicap, formerly a handicap, has been turned into a stakes event.
