The one mile and one-sixteenth stakes, for three-year-old fillies, along with the Clark Handicap and Kentucky Derby, is one of three oldest fixtures on the Churchill Downs agenda and it annually attracts a good field. The Oaks was given a 5,000 increase by Downs officials this year and 57 fillies were nominated last February 15 for the stakes, of which 13 have been named overnight. Some of the outstanding fillies who won previous runnings of the Kentucky Oaks were Warren Wrights Nellie Lā€ž Brownell Combs Miss Dogwood and Mrs. C. H. Clearys Flying Lill. The late E. R. Bradleys silks were carried to victory by Barn Swallow in the 1933 renewal and Hal Price Headleys Alcibiades won the event in 1930. Daniel E. Stewarts Rose of Sharon, C. B. Daileys Deeming, Audley Farms great thoroughbred, Princess Doreen, and Bronze Wing, who raced for A. P. Humphrey, Jr., were winners of the Oaks who distinguished themselves in other stake engagements during their campaigns. Conditioned by the -veteran Bert B. Williams, the daughter of Roman and Misty Isle, who is the property of Mr. and Mrs. Edward S. Moore, is ready for her test, and she will have the saddle services of William Balzaretti, who guided her in the Ashland. Mrs. Albert Sabaths silks are to carried in the Oaks by Say Blue, a quick daughter of Blue Larkspur and I Say. Say Blue was narrowly beaten by older horses in a distance race at Keeneland before her transfer to the Downs, but she has trained splendidly according to her conditioner, H. C. Dodson, and may be a potent factor in the feature. Say Blue finished second in the Selima, Joliet and the Pollyanna during her two-year-old season but she Continued on Page Thirty-One Cosmic Missile Has Twelve Rivals in Kentucky Oaks Continued from Page One was an impressive and game winner in the Princess Pat at Washington Park, in which event she earned 0,275 for her owner. Eric Guerin, rated one of the best of the present day riders, is to handle Say Blue in her Oaks engagement. Calumet Farms colors, prominently displayed thus far during the Kentucky spring meetings, are to be carried by Happiness and Jane Gail. These homebred fillies came up to their Oaks date nicely and Happiness will go postward under a feathery 109 pounds, while Jane Gail is to shoulder 116 pounds. Harry Hart will be at the reins on Happiness, while Doug Dodson is to pilot Jane Gail. C V. Whitney will be represented in the pre-Derby test by Mother, a homebred daughter of Mahmoud and Fuss Budget. Winner of the Betsy Ross Stakes last year, Mother, a spritely miss, is to take up 116 pounds in the Oaks and she will have the saddle services of Edward Arcaro.
