To Erect Marker in Memory Of Norfolk in California SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 1.— A permanent marker is being erected today to the memory of the great racer and progenitor Norfolk at Rancho del Rio. The dedicatory address is being made by Judge Peter J. Shields. Theodore Winters, "father of the breeding industry in California," and owner of Norfolk, had a plaque placed on the huge oak tree at the rancho under which Norfolk was buried to mark the final resting place of the noted thoroughbred. This marker was of oak covered with tin. It is being replaced by a replica in bronze by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Norfolk was foaled in 1861 and died in 1890. He is regarded by many as the greatest son of Lexington. Novice, dam of the Winters stallion, was by imported Glencoe.
