| Cactus Foot Displays Winning Suffolk Form Finds Sloppy Strip to Liking To Account For Exeter Purse SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 1.— Rumstick Lodges Cactus Foot found the sloppy condition of the local course to his liking in the Exeter Purse here this afternoon and flashing excellent speed throughout rather easily conquered his foes over the mile and a sixteenth distance. Three and a quarter lengths back of the winner, Mrs. Laura Brunos Y Gun gave a surprisingly good performance to take the place from the early pacemaker, Winsome Lad, from the R. B. Carroll barn, while fourth in the seven-horse field came the favorite, Alberto D., representing the Oran Lodge outfit. The ducks and geese cavorting in the infield pond enjoyed an ideal afternoon though the same can hardly be said of the frigid patrons, who braved miserable conditions. But the popularity of the sport in this sector was amply demonstrated by a turnout of 11,000, many of who huddled in corners under the grandstand in attempts to avoid the penetrating coldness. The dash to the first turn probably had much to do with the ultimate outcome, for at that point Alberto D. was allowed to race very wide and lost so much ground that he was forced under a drie prematurely in order to gain a contending position. Winsome Lad moved nimbly along in the van and was not hard pressed until near-ing the far turn, where Cactus Foot surged up. The two raced as a team around the bend and as they neared the stretch they were joined by Alberto D., who, at the time seemed ready to make it a battle for top honors. Winsome Lad, however, came out slightly and it appeared that he knocked the favorite off stride. This enabled Cactus Foot to sweep into a clear lead and from the eighth pole to the finish he drew off.
