Jack S. L. Carries Off Clark Handicap Honors Finds Muddy Track to Liking as He Leads Pellicle Length Margin CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1 . — Jack S. L., a seven-year-old gelded son of Jack High and Burgee, carried Mrs. John S. Letelliers silks to a surprising victory here today in the seventy-third running of the Clark Handicap. Jack S. L., well-ridden by Steve Brooks, who was completing a saddle double, sped to the end of the one mile and one-sixteenth test one length before Hal Price Headley s Pellicle, second by four lengths over his stablemate, Letmenow. Jack S. L. shouldered 116 pounds in todays stake, which burden was eight pounds less than that of the topweighted Pot o Luck. Stepping along steadily through the muddy footing, Jack S. L., the New Orleans-owned invader, completed his task in 1 :49% and returned his backers a straight pay-off of .40. Jack S. L. was narrowly defeated by Pot o* Luck in Keenelands Ben Ali Handicap, but the track was fast when the Lexington stake was decided. Little time was lost at the start and Letmenow cut out the pace to the stretch while Jack S. L. raced in nearest pursuit of the Headley mare. Bob Murphy displayed some early speed and Pellicle raced next in fourth position, while Pot O Luck, who appeared to dislike the mud, refused to extend himself and was last from start to finish. Jack S. L. moved up boldly when roused for the drive and, after he had raced Letmenow into defeat, continued gamely under Brooks urging and withstood a brisk bid by Pellicle. Although the latter was unable to overtake the flying victor, he easily beat his stablemate for the place and Bob Murphy held on well enough to earn fourth money.
