00,000 Gold Cup Tops Imposing List Of Stakes for Empire-at-Jamaica Meet International Contest Will Be Run at Summer Meeting Instead of During Autumn NEW YORK, N. Y., May 7.— One of the best -balanced stake programs in Empire City Racing Association history has been announced for the summer meeting, to be held at Jamaica from Monday, June 23, through Saturday. July 19. The program is headed by the new Gold Cup, for three-year-olds and upward, 00,000 weight-forage event. The stakes, totaling 35,000 added value, include such familiar and important fixtures as the Butler and the Empire City, the former for three-year-olds and upward and the latter for three-year-olds exclusively, each at a mile and three-sixteenths, with an added value of 0,000. The Gold Cup, first announced last autumn and designed for international competition, in the interests of which James Butler, president of Empire, made a flying trip to Europe last winter, will be run Saturday, July 19, the closing day of the meeting. Any horse or mare from anywhere in the world will be welcomed as a starter and the conditions state that, in the event of foreign entries, the starting gate will not be used. The distance is to be a mile and five furlongs and the added money will be 00,000. It had been originally planned to hold ► the race during the autumn meeting of the association, but this time of the year was found a poor one for horses racing in other parts of the world. The summer date was more convenient and, as the race builds up into an international fixture, that date makes* it possible for foreign horses to make the trip by air between their own spring and autumn meetings without a break in training. The nine stakes, with their running dates, are as follows: June 23 — Fleetwing Handicap, 0,000, three-year-olds and upward, six furlongs. June 25 — Wakefield Stakes, 5,000, two-year-olds, six furlongs. June 28 — Questionnaie Handicap, 5,000, three-year-olds and upward, one and one-sixteenth miles. July 4— Demoiselle Stakes, 5,000, two-year-old fillies, six furlongs. July 5 — Empire City, 0,000, three-year-olds, one and three -sixteenth miles. July 9 — Comely Handicap, 5,000, three-year-olds and upward, fillies and mares, one and one-sixteenth miles. July 12— Butler, 0,000, three-year-olds and upward, one and three-sixteenths miles. July 19 — East View Stakes, 5,000, two-year-old colts and geldings, six furlongs; Gold Cup, 00,000, three-year-olds and upward, weight-for-age, one and five-eighths miles.
