JUDGES STAND by charles hatton LEXINGTON, Ky., May 7.— The spring turf season in Kentucky is not altogether dull after Derby Day, although it is the sort of thing that appeals rather more to horse players than to racegoers. The club will offer its forty-sixth Bashford Manor this week-end, and usually it takes a nimble two-year-old to win this five furlongs. A few such as Black Gold, Sky Larking and Roman have even proven to have a future. William Veeneman won the Bashford last spring with an Easy Mon colt called Tweets Boy, and he has easily the most "accomplished" of the eligibles again this spring in Phar Mon, a son of the same speed sire. Veeneman paid "about 0,000" for him privately last season, and he has won the Hialeah Juvenile and Keenelands Lafayette in his expanding young career. Phar Mon enjoys pretty much the same local reputation that King Rhymer has in California and Saggy in Maryland, but you are not to infer from this that he is likely to have a walk-over for Calumets growthy Whirlaway colt, Whirl Blast, is a nominee, and Warren Wright tells us that "We think he is a very good prospect." He is a slick striding colt for one who is already 16 hands, and he won his first start at Keene-land rather impressively, then sat down at the start of a Downs race and was second to the smart filly, Hilda. Possibly he will become Whirlaway s first stakes winner, if Ben Jones decides to start him. AAA One wonders if Blue Grass can again beat Cosmic Missile in Fridays 0,000 Pimlico Oaks, and if either can beat Carolyn A., for that matter. It is hoped that this event will be free of the foul tactics which marred the Louisville race and deprived Cosmic Missile of the honor. You cant really blame people for being a little stuffy about that one. The Oaks at Pimlico has been Bashford Manor May Attract Whirl Blast Pimlico Oaks Winners Asset to Breeding Middle West Bids for Leading Race Mares La Troienne Family Near First ,000,000 won by several fillies who later proved an asset to the Stud Book. Its first two winners were Milkmaid and the stayer, Cleopatra, who were the dams of Milkman and Pompey. Then there was Nellie Flags dam, Nellie Morse. The race last May was won by Red Shoes, and she is to have the chance of founding Howell Jacksons stud in the Piedmont. We believe that Jacksrn plans to breed her to Bull Lea next spring, and he hopes for a filly foal. AAA Almost all of the good fillies now are in the East, and a good many of them will ship to Chicago for the summers filly-and-mare stakes at Arlington and Washington. Perhaps they will be shipped about more than usual this season, and particularly if Busher, First Flight and Gal-lorette train on, for trainers are not eager to chase a standout, no matter how rich the purses. In this way competition often helps clubs which cannot match others added money in bidding for stakes horses. It seems perfectly safe to say that if Busher can come back at Hollywood Park she will appear during the meet at Washington Park. By the way, one often sees stud ads in which it is boasted that the progeny of the sire advertised have won ,000,000. Some idea of La Troiennes worth as a broodmare may be gained from the fact that her son, Bimelech, and her daughters and granddaughters, such as Black Helen, Busher and Bridal Flower have earned more than 00,000. This is quite apart from the winnings of Bimelechs colts and fillies. Bear in mind that a mare has one foal a year, if she is a very good breeder, whereas a sire gets 20 or 30. AAA La Troiennes filly foal by Blue Larkspur is the newcomer that visitors to Jock Whitneys Greentree usually ask to see first, and she is not disappointing. The family has grown in another direction this spring, with the bay sister to Busher that Baby League has foaled at Cy Whites place. Those who are cynical about "class in the dam" are fond of pointing out that La Troiennes daughter, Black Helen, won the American Derby and has yet to foal a runner, whereas Baby League dd not race and has produced Busher. This may seem a good case to the superficial, but Olin Gentry explains that Black Helen is almost too small inside to have any sort of ioal, and Baby League was the fastest yearling ever tried at Idle Hour Farm. In any case, we would gladly take Baby League off Ogden Phipps hands any time he likes. She is one of those broad-beamed Sweep mares with a great deal of equine IQ, and she is a better milker than Daisy of Sunnybrook Farm. AAA Turfiana: It may amuse you that one of the turf scribes reporting the Derby became rather poetic and quoted a line from Milton about a Phalanx in his story. The editor questioned it, saying the only Milton he knew was the starter. . . . The "Judge" Churches Wrack mare, Jane Kemp, has an Easy Mon colt at Doug Davis farm nearby. . . . Walter Chryslers yearling shows are one jf the gala events of the season in Virginia, and he plans a renewal this summer, at a date yet to be announced. . . . Paul Mellon may have another nice hedge prospect in American Way. . . . Mildred Woolwine will give Boy Knight at least one proven producer in the dam of Saggy. ... If Tennessee breeders cannot mate Boy Knight, more of them may obtain more seasons to Kentucky sires. . . . Jack Denis will offer a Roman filly out oi a mare by The Porter at the Keeneland sales.
