Lieut. Well Captures Jervis Spencer Chase Fences Faultlessly at Pimlico And Easily Defeats Fleettown PIMLICO. Baltimore, Md., May 7. — Bayard Sharps classy jumper, Lieut. Well, emerged from winter quarters here today to rout six good rivals to the thirty-sixth running of the Jervis Spencer Steeplechase Handicap, first important jumping race of the 1947 season. Fencing faultlessly and revealing fine speed on the flat, Lieut. Well never left the issue in doubt once jockey Willie Passmore whipped him into command just after completing the thirteenth jump on the 15-jump course. The gelded son of Peace Chance drew out swiftly there-. after to reach the finish eight lengths clear of Brookmeade Stables Fleettown who was up in the very last step to snatch second honors by a nose from T. T. Motts faltering Floating Isle. Until Lieut. Well raced by him with apparent ease. Floating Isle had set a good early pace. Mrs E. duPont Weirs entry of Galactic and Binder, who finished fourth and seventh, respectively, closed favorite with Lieut. Well, paying .20 as second choice. Although the regular track was officially listed as fast, the steeplechase course was not at its best, and Lieut. Well was timed the two miles in 3:59, which was considerably slower than the track record of 3:4725. Racing vastly improved over his last effort at Havre de Grace, R. L. Hall, Jr.s four-year-old colt, Tacaro Briar, registered an upset victory over five good rivals which comprised the field in the six furlongs St. Germans Purse, which was the best offering on the flat. Revealing stout courage under Johnny Breens energetic handling, Tacaro Briar assumed the lead just beyond the furlong pole and held sway to the finish to score a neck triumph over S. W. Labrot, Jr.s Shako, who was an additional length and a half clear of E. C. Allnutts favored Meetmenow.
