Calumet Pair to Go In Bashford Manor Whirl Blast, Free America To Face Phar Mon in Downs Fixture This Week-End CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 7. — The 0,000 Bashford Manor Stakes, which will have its forty-fifth renewal here next Saturday, is expected to bring out a clever band of two-year-old colts and geldings. The final feature on the Churchill Downs spring program will be contested at five furlongs and 114 nominations were received for the dash at the time of closing last February 15. Annually one of the highlights of the Kentucky spring season, the 1947 running may produce another winner of the same caliber as Black Gold, Fighting Frank, Roman, Reputation, Coldstream, Worth, Billy Kelly and Tweets Boy, all of whom inscribed their names on the victors roster after previous Bashford Manor renewals. The William Veeneman silks were carried to victory last year in the Bashford Manor by Tweets Boy and the local sportsman may make it a double in the juvenile feature when his Phar Mon goes postward this week-end. Phar Mon, winner of the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes and the Ashland Stakes is the early favorite for the Saturday dash and the son of Easy Mon and Penroyal breezed three furlongs here this morning in :3625, going easily and well in hand during his short speed test. Mrs. Veeneman also may have a starter in the Bashford Manor, her Tiger Flash having shown exceptionally well and the colts recent trials are such that trainer Warren Dale Douglas may send an entry after the rich prize. Scipio in Half-Mile Trial Calumet Farms Bashford Manor hopefuls are Whirl Blast and Free America, and both of these Warren Wright-owned homebreds are rated dangerous. Whirl Blast was an impressive winner at the recent Keeneland meeting and Free Americas morning works have been on the fast side. Whirl Blast is a son of the mighty Whirlaway and Lady Peace, while Free America is the get of Blenheim II. and Columbiana, one of Calumets better-producing broodmares. Ben A. Jones announced this morning that both his charges will be under colors Saturday, barring mishap. Mrs. F. P. Letelliers Scipio is an eligible for the Bashford Manor and the colt won early this year at New Orleans. Scipios best effort since arrival in Kentucky was a third to Tiger Flash and Mealso at Keeneland, but he has improved steadily since that outing and worked a half mile early today in :48, handily, indicating that he is ready for his first major engagement. Madison Stock Farms homebred Lenoil. who graduated during the Crescent City winter season, shipped to the Blue Grass state in fine condition and won two races at Keeneland and Churchill Downs this spring. L. A. Hawkins, who trains the youngster, plans to start Lenoil in the Bashford Manor, and his charge is reported ready C. R. Millers Big Ditch, William Mikels Hypostyle, Augustus and Nahms Loujac. Foursome Stables Chalk, Gleeson and Lit-wins Fore Caddy, Murlogg Farms Gee Whiz, and J. K. Houssels Lucky Street are other nominees that may answer the bugle for the Saturday headliner. H. P. Headley nominated a pair of Menow two-year-olds, Pine Bloom and Kid Stuff, for the Bashford and one or both of the Beaumont Farm homebreds may be vanned here from Keeneland to contest the Saturday stakes. The best offering on tomorrows card is the Hash Purse, a one mile and one-sixteenth test for four-year-olds and upward. One Up, disqualified in his last start, and Miss America, moved into the winners slot after One Ups foul, meet again and others in the field are Puddle Jumper, Cadet Dick.
