Big Denemark Stable Arrives at Homewood Provocative, Enforcer, Bullish Stables Nominees for Crete WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., May 13. — Bob McGarvey, veteran developer of champions, whose charges won 26 races on Illinois soil last season for his well-known patron, Mrs. Emil Denemark, arrived at the local track this morning and included in the shipment of 28 horses was his three eligibles for Mondays Crete Handicap. They are the fleet three-year-old, Provocative, the four - year - old Enforcer, and the five-year-old Bullish, all regarded as formidable factors in the traditional opening feature. The Denemark trio is fresh from campaigns in Kentucky and are reported to be in first-class racing trim. McGarvey was too busy supervising the setting up of the entourage on the local backstretch this morning to decide on what course he will take in the Crete, the six-furlong dash which is one of the important features of the Lincoln Fields meeting. It is doubtful that he will send all three out. At the same time, however, there isnt much to choose between them. Probably the most highly regarded is Provocative, an extremely fleet sophomore who has captured two of his four starts this year. He was nominated for the Kentucky Derby, but McGarvey decided against attempting to get him ready for the mile and one-quarter classic. Prom his record, it appears that sprinting is his forte, anyway. Last year during a successful campaign that netted him a total of 1,650, Provocative on occasions defeated most of the leading youngsters of the country, including Olympia, Ocean Drive, Johns Joy, Commodore Lea and others. His only weakness, says McGarvey, is the fact that he requires an extremely fast track for his best effort. The son of Roman — Dusk II., by Asterus, gets in the Crete with 109 pounds. Enforcer showed enough as a two-year-old in 1947 to earn recognition as one of the best thoroughbreds ever bred in Illinois. The gelding started only seven times last season and finished no worse than second on six occasions, three times being vie- torious. In his most recent outing at t Churchill Downs he finished second to the j brilliant Bewitch in the 0,000 Inaugural 1 Handicap at Churchill Downs and in back of him were such stars as Southern Pride, , Free America, Syndicate, Phar Mon and 1 Miss Neal. Enforcer, who is assigned 110 for the Crete, handled the same impost in the Derbytown event. Bullish, after several unsuccessful attempts this season, finally regained his best t form on April 30 when he "spread-eagled" a field of sprinters. His margin at the wire B was seven lengths and thoso humbled were Syndicate, McCosh, Beach Miss and others. ;. Bullish is rated at 112 pounds for the Crete. Others in the Denemark string are Fire e Dust, Rosily, Stormy McCabe, Bobs Pal, 1, Top Tiger, Thank You Sir, On The Eye, !, Tootsie McCabe, Slick Pigeon, S. McLaughlin, - Fair War, Feudin Fightin, Dance Band, I, Hand Finished, Curtice, Our Agnes, Leo P. ►. McL., Late Hours, Futuramatic, Uncle Si, i, Frank Ashley, Button Shoes, Good Slave, Hufstader and Bobs Ace. Dee Sumpter, who has charge of the e stabling area during the Lincoln-at-Wash-ington meeting, reports that three other r prominent Crete eligibles are on the e grounds. They are Happy C, owned by y P. A. B. Widener II.; the Woolford Farms s Delegate, who is to carry topweight, and d Oscar Breaults With Pleasure.
