Wistful Proves Popular Pimlico Oaks Victress Duplicates Recent Kentucky Win ToBeatOutPacemakinglmacomin PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 13.— Calumet Farms Wistful, three-year-old half-sister to the current handicap champion, Coaltown, being by Sun Again — Easy Lass, this afternoon ran right back to her Kentucky effort to be first home in the twenty-sixth running of the Pimlico Oaks. The sleek-looking chestnut, as in her other Oaks triumph, overcame early roughing to come from far back under the capable Steve Brooks. Wistful turned the mile and a sixteenth over a fast track in 1:44%, while under intermittent urging, to out-finish Brookfield Farms game Heliopolis lassie, Imacomin, by nearly a length. Four lengths farther back was Murlogg Farms Admired, with Sunny Vale only a nose behind the show horse. Wistfuls time equaled the stakes record set by William L. Branns Gallorette in 1945, and her victory was worth 0,760 to Wright. A pre-Preakness turnout of approximately 13,000 fans witnessed the Oaks program under ideal conditions. They also witnessed a familiar sight in the winners circle following the running when Warren Wright, accompanied by Ben and Jimmy Jones, accepted a handsome trophy from Mrs. John K. Shaw, Jr. Admired outbroke her opposition, but she lacked the speed to stay with Imacomin in the early stages, as the Maryland-owned leader was kept under steadying restraint by Warren Mehrtens. Admired continued to press the pace along the backstretch. Wistful was on her toes at the break, but, when outrun to the turn, was impeded slightly and had to be steadied rounding the bend. She continued to race far back along the backstretch. Leaving the back lane, Brooks eased Wistful to the outside and the Calumet debutante responded with a rush to move from tenth position to the runner-up spot in less than a furlong. This move brought her within striking distance of the leader and she loomed from the outside, apparently destined for an easy triumph. Imacomin showed surprising tenacity, however, and held on doggedly under strong urging, forcing Brooks to keep Wistful to intermittent pressure to score.
