Safe Arrival Bolands Initial Winning Mount Expect Over 200 Persons to Colt to Score in Ballot Purse BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 13. — Friday the thirteenth proved to be a lucky day for young William Boland and several thousand favorite players as the Corpus Christi, Texas, lad rode the first winner of his brief career, when he piloted King Ranchs Safe Arrival to a half-length triumph in the featured Ballot Purse. George M. Jacobsons Alairne was second at the end of the mile and a sixteenth, with Russell A. Firestones Barrage a length and a half farther back. Gustave Rings Prefect, whose full brother, Quiet, had won the hurdle race, finished a distant fourth, just a neck before I. J. Collins Beau Nash, a ■ fugitive from Beulah Park, via Santa Anita. Safe Arrival stepped the mile and a sixteenth in the excellent time of 1:43% and returned .60. He was the third straight favorite to gratify the favorite players in the crowd of 20,672. Safe Arrival, who carried only 106 pounds, would probably have been odds-on but for the presence of the unfamiliar Boland in the saddle. The lad, who has an excellent seat, turned in a smooth effort, refusing to become overexcited when challenged in the stretch and employing his stick effectively when needed. The photographers found him an eager client in the winners circle. The field left the gate unanimously in the Ballot, but after a few strides Prefect took a half-length lead over Safe Arrival, who was the same margin before Alairne and Barrage, while Beau Nash dropped away from the fast pace. Safe Arrival took command nearing the far turn and opened up a little more than a length over Prefect, who was a length before Barrage, with Alairne the same distance away. Alairne swepk up on Safe Arrival at the final bend and the favorite came into the stretch only a head in front, while Barrage was the same distance away and between them. Boland hit Safe Arrival a couple of times at the head of the home lane, then sat down to a hand ride to the eighth pole, where he stung the Eight Thirty colt again and obtained quick response. Safe Arrival b»gan to draw away in the final strides, while Alairne also drew away from Barrage. Prefect stopped badly, while Beau Nash was never in the hunt.
