Frere Jacques always has been regarded as one of the best turf course racers in the nation and he has compiled a sparkling record against high class competition. On last January 25 at Hialeah, Frere Jacques turned back a quick field in the Ft. Dallas Handicap and he later captured the 0,000 Bougainvillea Handicap at the Florida track. In the latter event, the Sher gelding equaled the one mile and three-sixteenths grass strip record, stepping the Bougainvillea distance in 1:57 Vs. Before transfer to the Motor City from Chicago, Master Bid won three straight races but he was no better than sixth back of Papa Redbird, Porters Broom and Star Reward in the Curtain Up Handicap, local inaugural feature. Hank Manifold, who successfully handled Master Bid in his Illinois triumphs, is to ride the Grissom hope in the Michigan Mile. Seven League, four-year-old son of Our Boots, who is to have the saddle services of Benny Civitello tomorrow, recently visited the local winners ring after defeating Bright Steel, Blue Badge, a Michigan Mile entrant, and Crack Reward. Seven League compiled a fine record in his three-year-old campaign, achieving major honors in the Potomac Stakes and the Absecon Handicap. The Augustus colts morning trials indicate that he is near peak form and he may prove a tartar for some of his better rated rivals in the main attraction. Blue Badge has turned in several good performances this year, accounting for four victories against better-than-average company; Love Sonnet gave a splendid effort in earning third behind Shy Guy and Miss Mommy in the Border City, while Roi Rouge unloaded at the Fair Grounds after whipping a fast field of sprinters at Churchill Downs. Shivaree, a homebred son of Swashbuckler, won the Heiser Handicap, racing six furlongs in 1:10% at Pimlico last November, then finished second on May 14 at the same course behind Istan. Reportable, who raced in New England last season and at Oaklawn Park this spring, is a well-made filly, the get of Zacaweista, but it is doubtful if she has the stamina to figure seriously in the Michigan Mile.
