Quintet to Contest Belmont Filly Stake Rare Perfume, Bed o Roses And Three and Two Meet In National Stallion Today BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 23. — Sixteen months past, January 15, 1948, to be exact, the filly division- of the National Stallion Stakes closed with 248 nominations, The event will be run as the sixth race here tomorrow and a total of five were named of which Set Aside and Rare Perfume will race coupled as the Mr. and Mrs. George D. Widener entry. The paucity of overnight nominations is ascribed to a great extent to a light epidemic of coughing which is prevalent at the present time. In addition to the Widener duo, Calumny, owned by Joseph M. Roebling, the Greentree Stables Three and Two and Alfred G. Vanderbilts Bed o Roses comprise the field. Tomorrows running marks the second for the distaff side of the family and last season six faced the starter with Green Baize emerging the winner. The event carries an added value of 0,000, but due to the nomination, eligibility and starting fees, the value to the winner will be. in excess of the added monies. The race is at five furlongs over the "Widener course. The Mulholland-trained pair looms as the probable overnight choice on , the strength of a meeting several days back when Rare Perfume whipped Bed o Roses by one and one-half lengths, finishing third and fourth, respectfully, to Wise Cutie and Puff in a five-furlong whirl down the Widener straightaway. ScurJock on Widener Juvenile Mulholland also stated that he would assign the more experienced Ovie Scur-lock to Rare Perfume and this also enhances the opportunity of the stable in the test. Set Aside was making up ground in her most recent effort when she finished unplaced, sixth to the sensational Fais Do Do, who won by five lengths, and beaten an additional two lengths by Light Upon, Our Patrice, Safety Catch and Dent-rifice. In her debut she finished second to Chance Luck, finishing resolutely at the end. Three and Two, the reliance of the Greentree Stable, finished second to Our Patrice in her last start, Saturday last, and showed considerable improvement in J that effort. She can be counted upon to improve. Calumny showed little in her last, but previous to that at Jamaica was returned a winner. In the Jamaica test she downed Wise Cutie, speeding five furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:01 Vs. That effort stamped her as a better hazard in slop or mud than over a fast strip. Regarding the weight assignment there is little on which to base argument. With the exception of Three and Two, who carries 114, the others will carry 119.
