Dr. Almac in Initial Accounting of Season Regains Lead From Wickers Wish To Prevail by Head at Camden GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 24. — Mrs. James V. Stewarts Dr. Almac accomplished his initial score of the 1949 season when he was first home in the Assembly Purse here this afternoon. Dr. Almac was the fifth winning favorite on the program and paid .20 as Charles Pennock accomplished his first success since becoming a journeyman jockey. Establishing the early pace and respond ing gamely after being displaced, Dr. Almac gained the verdict by a head for his backers in the crowd of 12,672. Giving the choice a stern test was W. M. Wickhams Wickers Wish, who held a two-length advantage over Christiana Stables Alexis for the place. The ill fortune of Christiana continued in this race as Alexis broke tardily and was a trailer, as Dr. Almas sprinted to the lead in the run to the first turn. The choice disposed of Jetsam early, but drew clear only briefly in the vicinity of the half mile pole. Herb Lindberg, astride Wickers Wish, drove his mount through along the rail midway of the final turn and wrested command, but only briefly. Once straightened for the drive, Dr. Almac responded to. Pennocks urging and outgamed his adversary.
