Vulcans Forge Heads Classy Suburban Line-Up of Thirteen at Belmont Course .Loser Weeper, But Why Not,t Conniver, Pilaster, Chains To Cut Figure in Running BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 28. The Suburban Handicap, one of the traditional fixtures of Metropolitan racing, will be run for the sixty-third time on Monday. Inaugurated in 1884 at Sheeps-head Bay, over that long span of years the Suburban has maintained its hold and serves annually to attract one of the largest crowds of the season to the Nassau County track. Thirteen overnight entries were named to measure strides over the mile and one-quarter distance for the 0,000 added prize. Eleven interests are represented in the overnight list as Contest, Flying Missel and But Why Not are coupled as the King Ranch entry. Vulcans Forge, racing for I. J. Collins, is the topweight, with 124 pounds, the bulk of which will be Eddie Arcaro. Vulcans Forge was on the main track this morning for his final sharpening and he blazed over the five -furlong distance in 1:00. Vulcans Forge is. the starting topweight, for Coaltown, who was assigned 138, and Shy Guy, with 125, are absentees. The Dixiana four-year-old is in Detroit and the Calumet stable comet will remain in his stall. When the weights for the race were released by handicapper John B. Campbell scant hope was entertained that Coaltown would fulfill the engagement under the impost. Vulcans Forge is asked to concede four pounds to Harry La Mon-tagnes Conniver. Harry L. Straus Pilaster, a whirlwind last season, has 118, while the lightweight of the lot is Frank Frankels Frankly, who has the feather of 105 pounds and the veteran lightweight rider, Gene Pederson in the irons. With Coaltown not in the line-up the race may develop into a real contest, for in the field there is no starter, who, on recent efforts, appears to hold a pronounced advantage. The old adage of the turf, weight brings them together, could be borne out in this offering, for a span of 19 pounds is shown between the top and lowest weight. Vulcans Forge accounted for the Santa Anita Handicap; Loser Weeper has to his credit successes in the Metropolitan and the Valley Forge; But Why Not won the Firenze, while Tea-Maker, Flying Missel and Make-Up Man won at this meeting. Despite his weight assignment Vulcans Forge shapes up as the likely choice. This four-year-old son of Mahmoud and Burning Light, finished second to Loser Weeper in the Metropolitan, when he was conceding 21 pounds to the Vanderbilt colt. Monday, there is a pronounced difference. Loser Weeper will carry 112, a shift of nine pounds in favor of the Ohio-owned colt. Loser Weeper won that test by one and one-half lengths while a neck back in third place was But Why Not with 119. The King Ranch mare sheds two pounds from that effort, in which she was in receipt of seven pounds from Vulcans Forge. Conniver has not faced the starter since her Firenze engagement on May 5 at Jamaica, and over the mile and one-sixteenth Continued cn Page Forty-Seven Vulcans Forge Has Twelve Fit Rivals in Suburban Continued from Page One of that race But Why Not was triumphant with 116 pounds. Conniver, with 126, was third. Allies Pal split them. Faultless, the hope of the Calumet menage, has 114 pounds and his most recent start finished fifth in the Metropolitan, back of Tea-Maker and Loser Weeper, Vulcans Forge and But Why Not. In that race he carried 117 as against 114 on Monday. Pilaster is an arrival from Maryland but this fellow to date has not raced to the form he displayed the previous year. Rose Beam, owned by the Foxcatcher Farm has one overnight essay here since his arrival from Santa Anita. In the San Juan Capistrano Handicap he finished third to Miss Grillo and Dinner Gong, beating Vulcans -Forge over the mile and one-half distance. In his lone essay here he was third to Make -Up Man and Doubtless. Chains proved somewhat of a disappointment in his last, as he moved into command at the stretch turn but then faltered. Tea-Maker, under the weight, has some kind of a chance, while Frankly appears outclassed. The other two in the King Ranch entry have shown at different times encouraging efforts and of the two, Flying Missel appears the best. Hirsch stated that he would start all three. Make-Up Man has been regarded as a sprinter and the mile and one-quarter appears beyond his ability.
