Dozen Slated to Compete In Suffolks Tomasello Mother, FromC. V. Whitney Unit, Faces Flag Drill, First Nighter SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 28. The richest week of Suffolk Downs meeting gets under way on Monday with the Tunning of the 0,000 Tomasello Memorial Handicap and is climaxed on Saturday with the Yankee Handicap, 5,-000 sophomore stake. A dozen eligibles have; been named to compete in the Tomasello, with all but C. V. Whitneys Mother considered New England regulars. The gray daughter of Mahmoud isnt exactly a newcomer to this sector because back in 1946, racing as a two-year-old, Mother was shipped here to compete in the Betsy Ross Stakes. The Whitney miss had failed to win a race prior to the Betsy Ross, yet she was at her best that day and defeated a formidable field for her initial triumph. In the Tomasello, Mother will be meeting members of the opposite sex in this area. Her impost of 108 pounds, which includes another New England favorite, jockey Clarence Picou, should not hamper her chances if up to the task. The leading contenders in the Tomasello appear to be Honeywell Farms Mesmer, starting high weight of 117 pounds, .Marlet Stables Column, Cherry Oca Stables First Nighter, Clarence Hartwicks Flag Drill, and Fantasy Farms Grand Entry. Flag Drill is the only member of this group that has a stakes victory to his credit during the 1949 campaign. The son of Flint Shot annexed the Governors Handicap earlier in thecurrent meeting. Tomorrows distance of nine furlongs may prove the undoing of this front-running fellow who is best suited at shorter tests, yet he continues to train well and will be a stern competitor as far as he goes. First Nighter has been somewhat of a hard luck horse in most of his spring ventures. Last Saturday the Eight Thirty colt was blocked while challenging the leader in an overnight allowance event and had to be content with fourth money behind Grand Entry, Column and Mesmer. The former stakes winner will be out to avenge that reversal in Mondays feature. The others in the holiday attraction include Circle K Farms Misleader, Graham and Byrums Fancy Flyer, Anthony J. Ryans Rabies, Reynolds Brothers Mr. Chairman, H. G. Bedwells Leamour, and Marlet Stables Sneak. The latter is the only three-year-old listed in the overnight line-up and must be considered a doubtful starter inasmuch as he is slated to start in todays ,500 Constitution Handicap.
