Palestinian Lowers Camden Record Travels Mile and Quarter In 2:015 to Defeat Olympia Bieber Colt Catches Hooper Favorite in Midstretch and Then Draws Off Swiftly GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 28. Under Hedley Woodhouses left-handed lashing, Isidore Biebers Palestinian went to the tiring Olympia at mid-stretch, caught him at the sixteent pole and drew away to shatter Garden State Parks track standard with a 2:01 mile and a quarter as he captured the eighth running of the 0,000 Jersey Stakes, richest race in the state. When thevwhite-stockinged Palestinian, carrying just 114 pounds crossed the finish line under strong pressure, he was a length and a half before odds-on Olympia, top-weighted at 126 under the silks of Fred W. Hooper. Six lengths off the favorite was Colonel Mike, owned by Eugene Jacobs, who tired badly after reaching Olympia on the stretch turn. However, it seemed that Colonel Mikes chore of pressing Olympias pace was a material factor in the triumph of Palestinian, trained by Hirsch Jacobs, brother to Colonel Mikes owner. One length behind the Colonel at the line was Greentree Stables One Hitter. Palestinian was second choice of the crowd of 26,061. He paid .00 stroight and .20 to place. Place tickets on the favorite were worth .40. From the gross purse of 8,800, the son Of Sun Again Dolly Whisk took down net earnings of 0,700. This boosted his seasons total to 6,725, the overall to 00,750. Palestinians record-clipping race, made possible by Olympias blistering pace, whittled the mark of 2:03, set by Citation in his Jersey triumph last spring. Olympia clicked off the first six furlongs in 1:11, sizzled over the mile in 1:35 which was two seconds and two -fifths under the track mark. Jacobs Accept Trophy Following the Jersey running, Eugene Mori, president of the Garden State Racing Association, presented a trophy to trainer Jacobs in the absence of Palestinians owner. The former, beaming, accepted as the homebred Sun Again colt, registered his first stakes victory of the season, and the outstanding one of his career. When the five sophomores came out of the gate Olympia led the group, just as everybody thought he would. However, he was unable to draw clear as the runners came streaking past the stands for the first time. Colonel Mike, racing on the rail under Jimmy Stout, was closest to the pace. On the outside, Palestinian was closer than usual. Air Attack and One Hitter, in the rear of the closely-bunched pack. On the first turn, Arcaro pressured Olympia to a daylight lead, but the Colonel was a stubborn pace forcer on the outside. Palestinian was third, two lengths off the other Jacobs runner. Olympia was fairly flying on the front end down the backstretch, but Colonel Mike was going right behind him. The two drew away from Palestinian, but Woodhouse, who rode a good race on the colt in the Derby, was merely biding his time. When Olympia came out of the back-stretch and flashed around the bend, Colonel Mike made his move under Stouts urging and went to the leader on the outside. Here, Woodhouse set down Palestinian, who was saving ground on the inner path. However, Colonel Mike wasnt quite equal to the task of putting away Olympia. The Hooper colt drew away again in the upper stretch, but now -Palestinian was moving. Taken to the outside of the pacemaker, Palestinian began to wear down the favorite. Woodhouse, who had been whipping intermittently with his right hand on the turn, switched hands and lashed the Bieber runner with the left. Immediately, the big chestnut responded, and began to draw closer to the leaders. When Palestinian, charging on the overland path, caught the wearying Hooper bay, there was no faltering. Palestinian kept on moving under good pressure and slowly drew past the public choice.
