Yes You Upsets in Frontier As Johns Joy Finishes Third Arise Noses Out Favorite For Place While Headleys Colt Registers by Length FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 28. Yes You, speedy homebred son of Eight Thirty and Who Me, carried Hal Price Headleys blue and white silks to a surprise victory here today in the 5,000 Frontier Stakes. Flashing brilliant speed during the final three-eighths mile of the six-furlong feature under a well-judged ride by Jerry West, Yes You sped to the wire a length in advance of Addison Stables Arise, who was second by a scant nose before John Kin-ards odds-on favorite, Johns Joy. Only five three-year-olds contested the Frontier; Brownell Combs highly regarded filly, Sequence, ran fourth while Henry Forrests Summond ran last. Shouldering 114 pounds, under the Frontier allowance conditions, which burden was nine pounds less than that of Johns Joy and seven pounds lighter than Sequences impost, Yes You stepped the three-quarters mile over the fast course in 1:11. Overlooked by the mapority in the totalisator, the Headley colt returned 1.00 straight. In capturing the thirty-sixth running of the Frontier, Yes You earned 1,375, that figure representing the victors portion of the 6,950 gross purse. Johns Joy Sprints Into Command Johns Joy sprinted into command as soon as starter John Morrissey sent the small field away in good order and Sequence along with Arise offered the choice the sternest opposition during the initial quarter mile. Yes You, who was away rather slowly, was last at the upper turn but he was over five lengths off the flying pacemaker. Approaching the stretch, Johns Joy continued to show the way and Sequence dropped out of serious contention as Arise began a rather bold bid and Yes You moved into third position. Johns Joy held a clear margin when settled for the closing drive and Yes You then drove the extreme outside, scarcely two lengths away. Nearing the final marker, the Headley colt forged to the front under Wests brisk urging and then drew clear while Arise and Johns Joy battled for the place award with the Addison stable racer getting that end of the spoils by a scant margin. Sequence, spent from her display of early foot and making her first start of the year, was soundly beate nalong with Summond, who never figured seriously in the Frontier running. Somewhat improved weather conditions prevailed today in the Motor - City area. Partly cloudy skies with the sun breaking through occasionally and higher temper- atures aided in bringing out a crowd of 18,968. The track was fast and several of the better offerings on the program were decided in sparkling time. Raymond Ankenbauers homebred Porters Broom, who lost a close decision to Papa Redbird in the Curtain Up Handicap on opening day, scored a driving neck triumph in the six-furlong Maidstone Purse, chief supporting event. Hard ridden through the stretch by Jimmy Duff, Porters Broom held on gamely to withstand a sharp challenge from Robert W. Athas charging Syndicate. Two and one-half lengths off the lapped leaders, E. Barry Ryans Touch Control closed well enough to garner the minor end of the purse from the five other top class sprinters meeting in the secondary attraction. Porters Broom, lightly weighted under 105 pounds, stepped the three-quarters mile in 1:11 and he was a 2 to 5 choice in the wagering.
