Proud Proud Ruler Ruler Outruns Outruns Lincoln Lincoln Foes; Foes; Monterey Monterey Comes Comes Off Off Pace Pace to to Score Score BrentandThomasAce Defeats Bea Right Draws Away to Two-Length Success in Taffeta Purse; Cranbrook to Balmoral PAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 2. — Monterey, quick three-year-old gelded son of Tiger and Black Heels, carried the Brent and Thomas colors to an impressive triumph here today in the featured Taffeta Purse. Finishing strongly under a brisk ride by Jerry West, who was astride his second successful mount of the day, Monterey sped to the end of the six furlongs two lengths before Mrs. O. C. Neumanns Bea Right, second by a length and one-half in advance of Wm. E. Schmidts Pancho Supreme. Seven sophomores met in the headliner and Mrs. Moody Jolleys Mr. Jay, favorite for the sprint, finished sixth after beginning sluggishly. Taking up 116 pounds under the allowance conditions of the Taffeta, Monterey, the homebred, found the fast footing to his advantage and he turned in a sharp 1:11% for the three-quarters mile distance. Overlooked in the wagering despite three previous victories this year, Monterey rewarded those who backed him with a 9.20 pay-off. Trio Battles in Stretch Monterey steadily improved his position while Summond and Pancho Supreme engaged each other for the advantage to the stretch. Pancho Supreme forged to the front passing the furlong marker and Monterey was second a head back, while Bea Right was another head away in third position. The three leaders then staged a brisk duel, with Monterey proving the better and Bea Right downed the faltering Pancho Supreme, spent from his effort in putting Summond away. Taran closed determinedly to annex fourth money. Excellent weather conditions and a fast track greeted approximately 8,000 patrons on hand today for the Motor City sport. Balmoral, four-year-old son of Balladier, carried Mrs. Ellsworth H. Augustus silks to an impressive victory in the Cranbrook Purse, six-furlong secondary attraction. Splendidly handled by the veteran reins-man, Euclid LeBlanc, Balmoral came fast Continued, on. Choice in the totalisator, Balmoral paid .20 straight and sped the three-quarters mile in 1:12. William Zakoors Sticktome proved best of the ordinary platers meeting in the one mile and one-sixteenth initial offering. Confidently handled by Manual Gomez, who was riding his first winner in this country, Sticktome reached the wire two and one-half lengths before Charles City as Sir Monte ran third. Raymond ■ Ankenbauers favored Ego, ridden by Jimmy Duff, drove to a neck decision in the six-furlong second, beating James C. Ellis Blank Dismay. M. H.
