► — — MRS. E. H. AUGUSTUS— Balmoral carried her colors to victory in the Cran-brook Purse yesterday at Detroit Powder Puff Likely To Lure BabyComet Rosedale Winner, Wondring, Carmen Among Probables For Detroits June 8th Stake FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 2. — The Powder Puff Stakes, five-furlong feature for two-year-old fillies, undoubtedly will prove one of the highlight events of the current Motor City season. Racing secretary Charles J. McLennan recently announced that 27 junior misses are nominated for the dash, which will headline next Wednesdays sport at the local course. Outstanding entrants for the Powder Puff are James C.Ellis homebred Aunt Jayne Z., winner of the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs; Charlton Clays homebred Carmen, speedy daughter of Bull Lea and Colosseum; Dickey Stables Growing Up, Grant A. Dorlands Brown Brocade; Peter A. Markeys Baby Comet, Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Dogs Up, R. M. Woods High Frequency, and Dixianas Wondring. While it has not been definitely ascertained whether Baby Comet will ship from New York for the Powder Puff, the presence of the Markey miss in the Wednesday head-liner would add considerable luster to the stake. Baby Comet, a daughter of Teddys Comet and Rose Baby, was bred by her owner, and she won two of her three starts in impressive fashion. Herx major conquest was in the fortieth running of the Rosedale Stakes at Jamaica and the Markey filly beat G. D. Wideners Rare Perfume, J. M. Roeblings Bells of War, Rokeby Stables Airola, C. V. Whitneys Mackle, A. G. Vanderbilts Bed o* Roses, and other classy youngsters. Previous to her initial stakes triumph, Baby Comet visited the winners ring at Hialeah, stepping three furlongs in :33%. Won Debut Impressively Carmen made her first appearance under silks an auspicious one and scored a front-running graduation victory over some shifty rivals. The Clay miss assumed command after three-sixteenths of a mile in her local outing and she was two lengths on Dogs Up at the end of five furlongs. Brown Brocade, who was making her debut, finished third, beaten slightly more than two lengths in the May 26 event. Wondring, a daughter of the late 1944 Kentucky Derby winner, Pensive, and Sub Rosa,- stamped herself as a fast sort when she romped to an easy five-length decision in her first local engagement. Wondring easily vanquished Poka, Famous Shake, and Dogs Up and appears to be one of the better Fisher-bred juveniles. Trainer Jack C. Hodgins also has high hopes for Heres Hoping, a daughter of Eight Thirty and Seran, who won here at the first asking although she did not beat as sharp a field as her stablemate, Wondring. Buckley and Locklear will depend on Linda Jane in the Powder Puff and their representative won her only two starts during the Oaklawn Park meeting. Growing Up scored at Hialeah, Gulfstream and Keene-land and her morning trials indicate that she will be ready for the Wednesday fixture. United Nation, a member of the J. Farrell stable, possesses unusual mud-running ability and trainer George White plans to send the filly postward for the Powder Puff in the event that the race is decided over "off" footing. Raven Reward will carry the Farrell silks if the track is fast. Tomorrows card at the Fair Grounds will feature the Saginaw Purse, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, and seven sophomores are expected to answer the bugle. Louis Lee Haggin n.s Stole, who finished second to The Fat Lady in the 0,000 Royal Oak Stakes, is the probable choice for the headliner, but she will meet some stern opposition in Thomas Piatts Tobo, Arthur B. Hancocks Nitromond and Sky Heels, from the stable of P. R. and H. L. Hinton. Completing the probable starting -band are Roman Dayz, Veni Vici and Marketing.
