Friars Melody, Some Gold To Vie in Oak Brook Cup The two steeplechase horses generally considered to be the best in the Middle West will meet tomorrow in the Oak Brook Challenge Cup. Friars Melody, owned by P. T. Cheff, of Battle Creek, Mich., will vie with Chicagoan Paul Butlers Some Gold in the feature race of the second annual Oak Brook Steeplechase and Race Meeting. Six races are carded for the one-day meeting, with the first race starting at 2 p. m. The three-mile Challenge Cup will be the first meeting between Friars Melody and Some Gold, although each has made a remarkable record during Uhe last year on southern and eastern tracks. In five starts since he won the inaugural running of the Oak Brook Challenge Cup a year ago, Some Gold has taken two firsts and three seconds, and trainer-rider Hank Helgesen says the eight-year-old gelding is in prime.con-dition to repeat his 1948 performance.* Friars Melody, who will be ridden by Jerry Helder, of Battle Creek, is fresh from his eight-length victory last Saturday in the three and one-half miles timber race at the Oxmoor Steeplechase in Louisville. Earlier in the year, he won the feature race at the Tryon, N. C, meeting.
