Mother Gallops to Popular Triumph In Village Green Purse at Suffolk Downs Captain Boudour Runner-Up* . To C. V. Whitneys Homebred As Mullingar Annexes Show SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 2. — Two of the uppermost establishments in racing had the honor of having their silks carried to triumph at Suffolk Downs this afternoon before a crowd of 11,170 patrons. C. V. Whitneys Mother galloped to an easy score in the Village Green Purse, that featured the eight race program. Earlier in the afternoon Quick Retort carried the silks of Ogden Phipps Wheatley Stable to triumph over eight rivals in the six furlongs dash listed as the fourth race. Mother, shipped here for an engagement in last Mondays Tomasello Handicap, in which she failed to earn part of the 0,000 purse, completely outclassed her rivals in the Village Green. The margin of victory was only three and one-half lengths, but jockey Clarence Picou was probably scoring the easiest victory of his career. Never once did the Mahmoud mare leave the issue in doubt. The Whitney mare was backed to the prohibitive odds of 1-2 and traveled the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:45%, without any semblance of pressure pn the part of the cool riding Picou. J. L. McKnights Captain Boudour, who was sent out to set the early pace, held on gamely to earn second money a length before the fast closing Mullingar from Lou Johnsons stable. Sun Ember, Spiteful Sue and Leamour finished in the order named, completing the small field that cost the local management ,316.50 in a minus show pool. Quick Report had to work somewhat harder for her triumph over the band of claimers that carried price tags ranging from ,500 down to ,000. The sophomore daughter of Count Fleet — Slap, ridden by Charley Mullins, remained close to the pace set by Sam Garfields Gleam and Anthony J. Ryans Firesong until passing the ,final furlong marker. At this point Mullins called on the filly and the response resulted in the score that carried Quick Retort approximately a length before Fire-song. Gloam held on gamely to finish third. Quick Retort was overlooked by the wagering public and returned a tidy 4.40 for her initial victory in four starts this year. Time for the six furlongs was 1:12%. Trainer Bernie Rich is handling the local engagements of the Wheatley Stable representative.
