Y., June 7. — Fillies and mares will endeavor to entertain the fans at Belmont Park tomorrow, with the 5,000 Top Flight Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, the feature offering. A select field of five has been named for the tenth edition of this fixture. -Headed by King Ranchs But Why Not at 126 pounds. This Blue Lakspur mare is in the midst of a successful comeback after a fruitless campaign in 1948 that followed her brilliant 1947 season, at the end of which she was voted the champion three-year-old filly. But Why Not is asked to concede from three to 14 pounds to her four rivals, rfot an easy task in view of their demonstrated ability. Harry LaMontagnes Conniver, 123; Greentree Stables Paddleduck, 119; S. D. Sidells Allies Pal, 114, and Belair Studs My Emma, 112, are the four slated to put the King Ranch star to a searching test. Second in Suburban In her last appearance, But Why Not was a steady-going second in the Suburban, beaten two and a half lengths by Vulcans Forge at the end of the mile and a quarter after haying been only a head away from the winner after going a mile. Her stable-mate, Flying Missel, who won here yesterday, was four lengths back of her at the finish. Her previous start was the Metropolitan Mile, in which she was a fast-finishing third behind Loser Weeper and Vulcans Forge after having dropped far back in the middle of the race. Allies Pal received five pounds from But Why Not in - that race, while Conniver tried to concede 10. Conniver, who has shown extreme nervousness this spring, showed nothing of her great class in the Suburban, appearing a faint shadow of the mare who last year won the Pandora, Vagrancy, Brooklyn, Beldame and Comely Handicaps. She benefits by a six-pound shift in relation to But Why Not, but that will not be much assistance if she again leaves her race in the paddock. Eddie Arcaro will.be in the saddle and may be able to steady the huge daughter of Discovery. Paddleduck has improved vastly since her poor race in the Firenze, winning her last three starts. In her most recent appearance, the half-sister of Devil Diver whipped Allies Pal at a mile, with My Emma a distant fourth. Before that, she whipped Allies Pal at six furlongs, while the first of her three triumps was also at three-quarters. Eric Guerin will ride Paddleduck tomorrow in place of Ted Atkinson, who is suffering from a skin poisoning. My Emma cannot be disregarded on her best form. In her last start, the Isolater filly scored an easy triumph at a mile here, while she preceded her dull race back of Paddleduck with a similar victory at the same distance. BUG JUICE — Captured the Lazzarone Purse in the Bermill Farm silks yesterday at the Belmont Park race course.
