. Bug Juice Annexes Best Belmont Race Whips Favored Tea-Maker In Close Finish; Bad Fall Occurs in Eighth Contest BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 7. — Bermill Farms Bug Juice charged up under a hustling ride by Gordon Glisson to win the featured Lazzarone Purse at Belmont Park today by a head from Mrs. F. A. Clarks Tea-Maker, the favorite. Bel-air Studs Hyblaze was a half a dozen lengths away in third place at the end of the six furlongs, with Al-Jo Stables Splash a weary fourth in the field of eight. Second choice in the wagering, Bug Juice returned and was teletimed in 1:24 The worst spill in recent years on a New York track occurred in the eighth race, four horses going down in a pile-up where the Widener Course joins the main track near the head of the stretch. Jersey Day, who was leading, appeared to cross his legs and fell heavily. Win The Peace fell over the fallen leader and Bindo fell over both of them. Here Today stumbled into the tangle of fallen horses and jockey Claude Erickson fell from the saddle. Erickson and Gordon Glisson, who rode Win The Peace walked away, but Emil Flutie, rider of Bindo and Lee Harris, on Jersey Day were taken to the track hospital in the ambulance. Harris Injuries Undetermined Win The Peace, who fell end over end and landed heavily, was taken away in the horse ambulance with undetermined injuries. The other three horses appeared to be unhurt. Flutie was found to have escaped with bruises and a shaking up, while Harris was taken to Physicians Hospital for further examination of head injuries, the extent of which could not be immediately determined. As the horses piled into each other in a heavy cloud of dust, it looked like a cavalry charge into a nest of machine guns and it seemed impossible that the fallen riders could have escaped death or serious injury. All four of the riders lay scattered on the track, along with Win The Peace, for a few moments, but Erickson and Glisson got to their feet as the ambulance approached. The Lazzarone appeared a two-horse race on paper arid proved just that in practice. Skylighter was first out of the gate, but was quickly passed by Splash and Tea-Maker, while Nathaniel and Round View were close at hand in the run to the far turn, with Bug Juice next to last, but much closer to the leaders than usual. Tea-Maker took a slight lead over Splash rounding the far corner and the two continued to race heads apart to the stretch, with Skylighter daylight farther back and a half-length before Nathaniel. Round View dropped out of contention after going a quarter mile and Bug Juice began to move up on the outside. Tea-Maker came into the stretch a half-length before Bug Juice, who was carried somewhat wide by the tiring Splash and continued to drift out as he set sail for the leader. Glisson sat down to ride a powerful finish and Bug Juice gained with every stride, but Tea-Maker held on gamely and only succumbed right on the wire. The favorite was trying to concede five pounds to the Challenger TL. gelding and that made the difference.
