Eleven Go in Questionnaire Purse Mile Event Brings | OutWhirling Dough Marsch Colt Is Back in Own Age Division; Mr. Smug Seen Chief Rival in Mile Feature WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., June 7. — Whirling Dough, John Marschs three-year-old son of Whirlaway — Cash Book, who was regarded as one of the most promising thoroughbreds in the barn before the meeting opened here, will attempt to swing into winning stride when he faces a band of 10 sophomores in the Questionnaire Purse here tomorrow afternoon. An obvious mistake was apparently made in sending the colt against older company in Saturdays La Salle Handicap when asked to spot pounds of scale weight to his opposition and at the finish he trailed the field. He was rushed hard to gain the early lead but tired badly in the last quarter. Whirling Doughs activities in future months, as a result, probably will be confined to competing against horses of his own age. In a pair of previous races against three-year-olds he showed the type of promise that had been expected of him for some time. His initial outing of the year found him closing with a powerful rush to finish second against his able stablemate, or Skipper, at six furlongs, following which he showed a fair effort by finishing two and one-half lengths in back of Lextown in the 5,000 Peabody Memorial. He was fifth in the latter, the others who beat him being Saint Nicholas, Ky. Colonel and Mr. Smug. Won One Race in 22 Starts In his two seasons of campaigning, Whirling Dough has started 22 times and has won only one race. Still, he probably will come in for a powerful amount of support against his opposition in the Questionnaire. As a running partner he will have All for Free, another who has been lauded as a comer by the Marsch outfit, but who has been a disappointment. The son of Halycon Gift— Spread was a starter against Mr. Busher, Olympia and- others in last seasons Arlington Park Futurity, but was badly beaten and it was not until the other day here that he emerged from the ranks of the maidens. Shortly thereafter, he was backed into heavy favoritism but fell short of his goal when he was whipped by Loving Ties, a filly scheduled to start against him tomorrow. That race was at six furlongs and All for Free was catching the winner at the finish. Others booked to start in the Questionnaire are Edward E. Voynows Impact, William H. Bishops Halcyon Duke, Oscar J. Breaults Appeaser, Mrs. Thelma Otts Hasty Freedoms, Windsor Farms Red Dawn, and Dawn of Peace, David Straus Mr. Smug and Augustus and Nahms Pre-ceder. Mr. Smug, who closed with a powerful rush to finish fourth in the Peabody, probably will attract considerable attention. A rather leggy son of Alsab out of the Man o War mare, Miss Smug, he was regarded as trainer Howard Wells main threat for] the Kentucky Derby earlier in the year, but he was very slow coming to hand after a winter of rest and did not get to the post in Kentucky. Wells tried to get a race under his belt before the Peabody, but found it impossible and was forced to send him out with only the benefit of morning drills. He was unable to find his best stride during the early part, but made up a tremendous amount of ground through the long stretch run and was going as well as any at the end, in- I eluding Lextown, Saint Nicholas and Ky. Colonel. Wells isnt at all convinced that Mr. Smug wont play a prominent role in coming three-year-old fixtures at Arlington and Washington Parks and tomorrows race j is to be used as a conditioning step in that direction.
