Capot Works Mile and Quarter Route In 2:05% in Preparation for Belmont Greentree Colt Works With * Blinkers; Six-Horse Field Likely for Week-End Stake BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 7. — Greentree Stables Capot, who had a gruelling race in the Peter Pan Handicap on Saturday showed that he was still all in one piece this morning when he worked a mile and a quarter in better time than he was able to negotiate that distance on the week-end. With Eric Guerin in the saddle, and equipped with blinkers, the son of Menow stepped the ten furlongs in 2:05%, handily. The fractions were :23%, :48, 1:00%, 1:12%, 1:25% and a mile in 1:38%. In the Peter Pan, Capot was beaten 10 lengths in 1:49% and required 2:07 when worked out a mile and a quarter. A trial as severe as this one, following so closely after a race like the Peter Pan, in which Capot stepped the first six furlongs in better than 1:10 and appeared completely exhausted at the finish, is more than somewhat unorthodox and indicates that his connections feel that he is a glutton for punishment. The fact that his tough race in the Kentucky Derby, in which he forced Olympia to quit before i ►- succumbing to Ponders closing rush, followed by the train trip to Pimlico, put him in condition to win the Preakness in record time, suggests that he requires more work than the average three-year-old. The field for Saturdays eighty-first running of the Belmont Stakes is now expected to consist of six colts and shapes up as a wide open contest despite the small field. While Calumet Farms Derby and Peter Pan winner, Ponder, is expected to be favored over Isidore Biebers Palestinian, Greentrees Capot, Mrs. E. H. Ellison, Jr.s Sun Bahram, Clifford Mooers Old Rock-port and J. Graham Browns Saint Nicholas, on the theory that the mile and a half is just his dish, he shapes up as anything but a standout. Palestinian has improved steadily this spring, finishing third in the Derby, second in the Preakness, then winning the Jersey Stakes in which he beat Colonel Mike much more convincingly than Ponder did in the Peter Pan. Sun Bahram turned in an excellent race yesterday, when beaten a neck by the older Flying Missel, and before that finished a nose before Ponder at level weights in the Preakness. This son Continued on Page Two Capot Prills Ten Furlongs In 2:05% for Belmont Continued from Page One of the English Triple Crown winner, Bahrain, from the American triple Oaks winner, Suntica, is bred to run 11 day and is another who seems to be improving steadily. Old Rockport gives the impression of being strictly a plodder and the pace in this edition of the Belmont is not expected to be severe enough to help him much. There is a question if it will be fast enough for Ponder. Saint Nicholas closed with a rush to "be narrowly beaten by Lextown in his last western start at a mile and a furlong.
