JUDGE JAMES E. DOOLEY — President of the Narragansett Racing Association, which inaugurates its 30-day summer meeting at its Pawtucket course this afternoon. Narragansett Opens for 30-Day Run Coaltown Arrives at Track For Week-End Engagement Calumet Star to Accept 130 In Roger Williams Handicap; Eight in Inaugural Feature NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 7. — Narragansett Park opens its 28-day summer meeting tomorrow amid a blaze of glory. Coinciding with the closing of the entries for the opening day program was the arrival of Calumet Farms illustrious Coaltown, one of the foremost handicap stars of recent years. The good looking bay son of Bull Lea — Easy Lass unloaded at the Rhode Island track at 10:30 this morning, following an uneventful van trip from Belmont Park. Coaltown will receive a warmup prep on Thursday prior to fulfilling his engagement in the Roger Williams Handicap, Saturdays feature attraction at one mile and three-sixteenths for an added prize of 5,-000; Coaltown, the most talked-of horse in training, will carry topweight of 130 pounds in the Roger Williams and will be seeking his eighth consecutive triumph of the 1949 season. The opening day feature, named the Inaugural, for four-year-olds and upward traveling six furlongs for a purse of ,500, has attracted a select group of eight sprinters representing seven different interests. Of this band, only one, Phil Godfreys Tavistock, is a newcomer to the New England patrons. The five-year-old son of War Admiral was acquired by his present owner for 0,800 from the consignment of Albert F. Plock last Friday at Belmont Park. Tavistocks purchase was the highlight of the sale on that day and warranted brisk bidding before he was knocked down to Godfrey. In numerous starts this year against the top sprinters on the Metropolitan circuit, Tavistock was successful on one occasion, but finished in monied position five times. Lester Bedwell Saddles Entry Opposing the invader will be Lester Bed-wells pair of Oidenasai and H. Carrs O. G. Kelley, D. A. Rosenbaums Reborn, Mrs. R. C. Hodges Ground Fog -and Mrs. B. F. Listers Evening Rose. With the exception of Rebom, the entire group have visited the winners circle at least once this year and all represent a formidable field fit for the occasion as the opening attraction, of Gansetts meeting. Ground Fog surprised the local horsemen racing at Suffolk Downs recently when he turned in a three and one-half lengths score in 1:10% for the fastest time at six furlongs over the East Boston track this year. The four-year-old son of Lovely Knight carried 115 pounds in that winning race with apprentice Ray McLaughlin in the saddle. Tomorrow Ground Fog gets in the Inaugural with 113 and will have the veteran Billy Fisk at the reins. Buster Bedwell appears to have a strong hand in the Inaugural with Oidenasai and Gallant G. I. The former has only started three times this season and after two straight victories was unable to overcome slight interference in his last and had to be content with third money behind Scipio and Gee Whiz. Gallant G. I. usually is better suited at longer distances, but is capable of doing a bang-up job at any distance. Column has been in the money in each of his five starts at Suffolk Downs this spring, the majority of which were in stakes competition. The change to the Rhode Island oval may be what the Amphitheatre gelding needs to shake the jinx that has been keeping him from the win column since arriving from Florida. Evening Rose is a fleet homebred daughter of Bull Brier that cannot be eliminated in this caliber of opposition. This four-year-old filly has always been partial to the Gansett racing strip and, under her featherweight impost of 103 pounds, may be hard to catch. Reborn and O. G. Kelley" appear to be the outsiders in the feature and slight improvement over their recent efforts is needed to bring them -closer to the top honors. The supporting feature, named the Hill-grove, has attracted a half-dozen top sophomores to contest the six-furlong route. Prominent in the field is A. P. Cotters Petey Cotter, winner of his only two starts at Suffolk Downs. Opposing the Cotter star will be Daddy Joe, Musketeer, American Glory, Bolo Mack and Seely.
