Bea Right Scores By Two at Detroit Neuman Racer Ridden Out While Leading Shakeme and Blue Grip in River Rouge FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 7. — Mrs. O. C. Neumans Bea Right, quick daughter of Bimelech and Black Lashes, overcame interference during the stretch run of the featured River Rouge Purse, here today and defeated five other better class three-year-olds. » Forced wide by Mrs. Moody Jolleys Mr. Jay during the drive, Bea Right, superbly handled by Euclid LeBlanc, drew clear and sped to the end of the six furlongs two lengths in advance of Hal Price Headleys Shakeme. Charles Rufis Blue Grip finished third a similar distance farther back, beating out Mr. Jay for third by a neck margin. Shouldering 117 pounds, Bea Right was timed in 1:12% for the River Rouge distance and she was second choice in the totalisator at slightly better than two and one-half to one. The Neuman filly earned her second success of the 1949 season when she captured the Motor City headliner . Bea Right raced nearest Mr. Jay during the first half mile and proved herself quite game when she drove by the Jolley colt after being carried wide in the early stretch. Once in the clear, LeBlanc rode Bea Right out smartly and Shakeme, who saved ground at the final turn, closed well enough to hold Blue Grip for second honors. Mr. Jay, spent from his early pace-making task, was a weary fourth, while Dixianas Timeltel, the choice, ran fifth, and Summond from the Henry Forrest barn last. Double for Grissom Stable Clear but unseasonably cool weather was the order today in the Detroit area and an active crowd of 8,500 patrons witnessed the sport which was rather formful and contested on a fast track. The locally owned P. L. Grimson stable sent out its second winner of the day when Banovina drove to a length triumph in the six-furlong fifth race. Jockey Hank Manifold and trainer Marion Barton also figured in the Grissom double. Banovina was briskly ridden through the stretch to beat Tom B. Youngs fast-finishing Lambent, who saved the place honors by a neck margin from George Krehbiels Golden Bolt. The latter filly might have been a keener factor in the sprint had she broken a bit more alertly and missed the interference that developed immediately after the start. Sunshine Stables Lets Run also was in close quarters during the initial furlong and he lost all chance in the running. Henry Forrests Foray Vina, betting choice in the field of eight three-year-old starters, flattered his backers when he raced with Banovina to the stretch but failed to stay during the drive and was a soundly beaten sixth. Banovina won his second purse here in as many starts, sped the three quarters in 1:12% and paid .80 straight. G. Bagwells Swift Town, ridden by Ken Church, drove to a length and a quarter decision in the six-furlong first race. Swift Town assumed command in the stretch, then withstood a brisk drive to hold Gait Davis favored Yankee Raider safe, while another length and one-half back, M. Quin-ters Bracket finished third. Mrs. J. Bartletts Coiffeur caused a delay in the opener when she broke through the stall gate and injured apprentice Lois C. Cook, who had to have a couple of stitches taken in a cut over his eye. Jockey Willard Cook was substituted on Coiffeur, who broke so sluggishly that she lost all chance in the running. P. L. Grissoms Lees Summit, ridden by Hank Manifold, and Jimmie, a representative of Mrs. Roy Carruthers, handled by Manual N. Gonzalez, furnished the crowd with an exciting stretch duel and close finish in the six-furlong second, Lees Summit getting the nod by a scant nose. James C. Ellis favored Blank Dismay closed fast on the extreme outside to finish third, a length off the lapped leaders.
