Brooks Works Coaltown Six Furlongs In 1:l4Vs in Prep for Roger Williams Rider and Jimmy Jones Fly i To Narragansett for Colts Trial for Tomorrows Race NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 9. — Jockey Steve Brooks not only pilots the Calumet champions in their numerous triumphs throughout the country, but also pilots trainer Jimmy Jones in his private monoplane. Jones and Brooks flew in to Providence, R. I., this morning and were at the track at 8 A. M. to work the mighty Coaltown in his prep for Saturdays 5,000 Roger Williams Handicap. Dexter Phinney, regular exercise boy for the son of Bull Lea — Easy Lass, had the colt ready as the Calumet trainer and contract rider arriver at barn D in the stable area. Brooks sat in the tack as the groom led Coaltown around the walking ring in front of shed row for about 20 minutes before being taken on the track. Jones, astride a pony, accompanied Coaltown as he walked to the stand near the finish line. Brooks then took the bay colt back towards the three-quarter pole where he broke him off under a stout hold. The first quarter mile was flashed in :24, the half in :49, five furlongs in 1:01% and without releasing the hold Brooks allowed his charge to complete a six-furlong work in 1:14%. The move was accomplished in the middle of the track as the dogs were up to allow workmen to continue their work in raising the inner rail. On his return to the stable area, Coaltown wasnt breathing hard enough to snuff out a candle. After he was cooled out, Jones said he was "perfectly satisfied and hes dead ready." Following the chores at the barn, Jones and Brooks renewed acquaintances with old and new .friends around the secretarys office prior to preparing for the return trip to New York. As Steve Brooks will handle Ponder in the Belmont on Saturday, Ovie Scurlock has been engaged to ride Coaltown in his local appearance Saturday. The affable-speaking Jones was high -in his praise of the Narragansett racing strip. In talking about later engagements for the Calumet one-two punch, Citation and Coaltown, Jones said Coaltown would in all probability start in the Star and Stripes Handicap at Arlington Park on July 4. Citations return to racing and his first major objective is still not definite. The main question being asked at Gansett this morning is, "who is going to compete against Coaltown on Saturday?" Entries for the Roger Williams closed on June 1 with 28 nominations. In addition to Coaltown there are 17 of that number stabled here but none have indicated an interest in contesting the mile and three-sixteenths route against the Warren Wright colt. Ernie Hart, co-owner of Big Dial and Alairne with George M. Jagobson, flew in here Tuesday to supervise the conditioning of the pair who are eligible for the week-end feature. Hart left for Belmont Park without stipulating a commitment for either of the colts. He is expected to return tomorrow morning and will decide at that time. Bob Odom, trainer of Achilles Stables Campos, was originally scheduled to arrive here from Belmont Park with the seven-year-old Chilean-bred, but racing secretary "Ty" Shea was in receipt of a telegram last evening informing him that Campos has suddenly acquired a light case of fever and would not be shipped. Tomorrows off-day program will be featured by a mile and one-sixteenth allowance test for four-year-olds and upward. Seven candidates have been entered overnight to contest the ,000 purse in the top offering, which has been named "The Bay-view." A variety of claiming events complete the eight-race card, but should provide interesting sport inasmuch as the fields are well balanced with seasoned thoroughbreds.
