Lucky in Yearling Purchases CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky., May 5. — T. J. Nichols, own of the winner Day Star in the 1878 Derby, purchased the colt for 25 as a yearling. This marked, the second time Nichols, a resident of Bourbon County, Kentucky, had purchased a Derby winner as a yearling. In 1864, he had purchased Vagrant, winner in 1876 when that son of Virgil, was a yearling, but he later sold him.
