— . i Eight Candidates Fell by Wayside For Every Kentucky Derby Starter Fifteen three-year-old thoroughbreds are carded to parade to the post at Churchill Downs today as the band plays the heart-stirring strains of "My Old Kentucky Home," the customary prelude to a Kentucky Derby running. That 15-horse field, while the "cream of the crop" as of the present, reflects the uncertainty of racing so far as starting a colt in the blue ribbon event of the American turf is concerned. Paraphrasing Bobbie Burns classic lines,.the best laid plans of an owner often go far amiss, even within the short span of three months. When nominations for this seventy-sixth running of the Kentucky Derby closed February 15 last, some 80 owners named 134 sophomores in the fond though perhaps trembling hope of having their colors carried in the big race. Only eight sportsmen are realizing their wish,, and 119 three-year-olds have fallen by the wayside on the road to Churchill Downs. The training regimen, illness, accidents took a heavy toll. A quarter of a century ago the late Col. E. R. Bradley proclaimed — and was ever ready to lay the price — that it was 5 to. 1 a person could not name a Derby starter, not to say the winner, three months in advance of the race. In light of subsequent history, the good colonel was not giving himself the worst of it.
