NBA Will Still Recognize Ezzard Charles as Champ PATERSON, N. J., May 5 UP. — Abe J. Greene, commissioner of the National Boxing Association, said today the NBA would continue to recognize Ezzard Charles as world heavyweight champion until such time as that a "conclusive physical examination" might prove him unfit for fighting. However, Greene said meanwhile the NBA would redouble its efforts to stimulate activity in the heavyweight division to secure an outstanding challenger for Charles, if he is found fit at his next examination, and to obtain two contenders in case Charles must retire.
