7,773 Man Churchill Downs Mutuel Department Today CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 5. — E. A. Weidekamp, veteran Downs mutuel director, and his assistants, Ernest B. White and Johnny Walsh, wUl head a wagering crew on Derby Day that will number 1,173 men. Weidekamp has handled the betting end of the big race for many years and he has brought together an outstanding crew for the 1950 renewal of the three-year-old classic. Weidekamp anounced this morning that 411 sellers are to be on duty and 394 cashiers will pay off those fortunate enough to land their choices in the money. The mutuel front office staff comprises six men, there will be 50 messengers, 45 ticket checkers, 56 sheet writers, 105 money room men, 20 money room runners, 44 supervisors, 10 board men, 12 approximate odds board men, six calculators, and 15 guards.
