► My Bebby in Front Throughout To Gain Third Straight Tally Bieber Miss Never Seriously Pressed Although Favored Merry Xmas Finishes Well By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 10.— Isidore Biebers My Bebby, a graduate of the claiming ranks, won the featured Shamrock Purse at Jamaica today. She beat Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Merry Xmas, the only one of the six fillies to have won a stake, by three parts of a length. Merry Xmas was slightly favored over My Bebby. Apheim Stables Rampallion finished a length away in third place after forcing the pace, while Cresson Farms Betty Lamar finished two lengths out of the money, after trying to lug in most of the way Bennie Green rode My Bebby, who was scoring her third straight, the last two in 0,000 claimers. The brown daughter of Discovery paid .80 and required 1:12 for the six furlongs. The throng of 18,910 was treated to large quantities of pale, dry sunshine and a paucity of winning favorites, only one scoring through the feature in contrast to the pattern of recent days. My Bebby and Rampallion were the only ones of the sextet disputing the Shamrock who are not eligible to the Coaching Club American Oaks, but there is some reason for doubt that the other four belong in the classic filly stake. A reservation might be made for Up Early, who won her only start last year, had speed for a half mile in her 1951 debut today and was eased from the head of the stretch. Betty Lamar Lunges for Rail My Bebby went into a daylight lead at the start of the Shamrock, followed by Rampallion, Merry Xmas and Up Early, who raced as a team, with Up Early on the outside. Betty Lamar began to try to lunge for the rail soon after the start and gave Keith Stuart quite a time as the boy struggled to keep her out of the infield. The order didnt change to the head of the stretch, where Up Early dropped out of contention, soon falling back of Inan-about, who had been trailing, while Betty Lamar moved into third place. Merry Xmas made a determined run at My Bebby in the stretch but wasnt able to seriously threaten that filly and Green wasnt forced to exert himself unduly to stave off the challenge. Rampallion held on somewhat better than she had in her last start. W. J. Lenihans September ran a race she is not likely to soon forget when she won the Rose dOr Purse that followed todays feature, as Ted Atkinsons whip never stopped flailing from the top of the stretch to the wire, which she reached a neck before William Nobles Abbie Co. Ada L. Rices Sickle Flight was another length and a half away at the end of the six furlongs and almost the same margin before Ethel D. Jacobs Our Patrice, the favorite, who tired badly. It was ladies day at Jamaica today, with five of the eight races being for fillies and mares. The only winning favorite, however, was the colt, Ham Bone. George D. Wideners Teddys Picnic ran away before the first race, charging up the track toward the reserve- starting gate, Continued on Page Thirty-Eight I My Bebby Leads Throughout For Third Straight Score Continued from Page One where he swerved and spilled Emil Flutie. then disappeared into the horsemens J parking lot. Flutie was unhurt, the gelding soon recaptured and brought back to start in the race, in which he fought for the early lead, then dropped back to finish next to last. Flutie continued to whip industriously to the end. Peter A. Markeys Pops won the race handily by four lengths from Joe W. j Browns favored Sea Bob, with Jimmy Nichols doing the steering. Isidore Biebers Yor Optician was another length in arrears. Biebei applied for this name the day that Repetoire won the Remsen here last year, believing that misspelling was lucky. Pops paid .90 as second choice and stepped the five furlongs in :5JHs. Con Errico completed a double when he brought Ala Stables Tina Lazar up on the outside to win the Boxwood Purse by two lengths from J. J. Colandos favored Gloryo. who bore out badly in the stretch. R. W. Hallowells Gaelic Gal was a head farther back, closing strongly, while H. E. Simpsons Mile. Ell was a weary fourth after fighting for the lead to the eighth pole. Tina Lazar, who had finished fourth in the Rosedale Stakes last Wednesday, which was won in 1:00% by Blue Case, stepped the five panels in :5945 and paid .40. Errico had won the second race on Algie.
