Dodgers Defeat Cubs, 6-1; Hodges Blasts Ninth Homer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 10 UP .β€”Don Newcombe pitched his first complete game in three weeks today, giving up only seven hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs, 6 to 1, to win the "rubber" match of their three-game series. The big Negro right-hander struck out five men, walked only two and rapped two timely singles as he breezed to his third victory against one defeat this season. Newcombe had been batted out of the box in his last three successive starts since he went the distance in his initial victory on April 20. Brooklyn took advantage of some loose Chicago fielding to score a run in the sec ond inning and then clinched the game by putting together three extra base hits for three more runs against Cal McLish in the fifth. Cal Abrams double, Pee Wee Reeses triple, an outfield fly, and Gil Hodges ninth homer of the season, produced the three fifth-inning tallies. Singles by Newcombe and Abrams, a base on balls to Reese, and Duke Sniders single added two more runs in the sixth and drove McLish out of the box. The score by innings: R. H. E. CUBS 000 000 100β€”1 7 4 DODGERS 010 032 OOx β€” 6 11 1 McLish, Kelly 6 and Walker; Newcombe 3-1 and Campanella. Losing pitcher, McLish 1-1. Home run β€” Hodges 9th.
