In Jervis Spencer Rokeby Stable Chase Has Lone Fisherman and Kipper Among Rivals at Pimlico PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 10.— Members of the steeplechase division are offered their lone stake opportunity of the Maryland spring season tomorrow when Pimlico presents the thirty-eighth running of the ,500 added Jervis Spencer Handicap, a test of about two miles and over 15 jumps. Formerly run as the Green Spring Valley, the race was renamed about a decade ago to honor the memory of the former chairman of the Maryland Racing Commission. Another highlight on tomorrows program will be a special ladies race to be presented between the fourth and fifth races. There will be no wagering or purse in this event, but the winning rider will receive a trophy, as will the owner of the successful horse. The distance will be a mile and a sixteenth. Scheduled to ride are Wantha Davis, Joyce Goldscmidt, Betty Bosley, Phyllis Lose, Judy Johnson and Mrs. Charles Lewis. Returning to the Spencer, Rokeby Stables consistent gray, Genancoke, will tote highweight of 150 pounds, including Tommy Field, and will be opposed by the following: F. Ambrose Clarks Lone Fisherman, 148; Lazy F Ranchs Extra Points, 140; M. Amdrew Cushmans Kipper, 139; Mrs. L. E. Stoddards Port Raider, 136: J. Smerskis Whatta Knight, 135, and The Happy Hill Farm-C. Mahlon Kline entry of Adaptable 140 and Good Marks, 135 pounds. Only One Fall in Career Genancoke is a steady-going nine-year-old and, according to trainer Jack Skinner, possesses the enviable record of having fallen but once in his long campaign. Always fond of the local course, Genancoke redemonstrated his capabilities early in the week when he was an easy winner in 3:51%, while racing under a 144-pound assignment. During past seasons the veteran has accounted for the 1948 Battleship and the, 1947 Governor Ogle and Georgetown handicaps. Lone Fisherman raced twice this year at hunt meetings and boasts a victory over Genancoke at Middleburg. This son of Annapolis shapes up as the likely conten- tion, but he will have his work cut out for him if he is to down the aforemen-j tioned lepper. Lone Fishermans rider in the Spencer will be Elwood Carter, who has ridden him in his races for the past two years. A 1950 stake winner in the group Is Kipper, who won two of nine races last season, including the Hitchcock Handicap. Trainer Morris Dixon will saddle both Adaptable and Good Marks, with the former apparently the more proficient. This 10-year-old last year scored in the Corinthian and one other race, and in past seasons accounted for the Manley, Temple Gwathmey, Meadow Brook, Grand National and Brook Handicaps. Good Marks lone victory last year was an impressive one but was against lesser company. Extra Points, Port Raider and Whatta Knight shape up as named, with the first having impressed on occasions. He com-; peted in the local race won by Genancoke earlier in the week but lost his rider early in the running.
