TwoTracksOpened Here 25 Years Ago Lincoln, Washington Have Staged Great Sport; Former Opens #51 Meeting Tuesday HOMEWOOD, 111., May 10.— Twenty-five years ago this summer two new race tracks were opened to Chicago sports enthusiasts. Each has put a quarter-century of brilliant racing into the annals of the American turf. Next Tuesday one of these tracks, "new" Washington Park to distinguish it from the vanished but ever famous nine-;rs teenth century track of the same name, will be "host" to the other when the Lin-he coin Fields Racing Association opens its twenty-sixth annual meeting for a run of days at the Homewood course. While i state highway construction and other im-s- provements are in progress at its own plant Crete, Lincoln Fields once more is a temporary tenant at Washington Park, While the ownership and operation of Lincoln Fields and Washington Park have been unrelated for the past 16 years, both tracks once were controlled by the late Col. Matt Winn, famed "round the world" the impresario of the Kentucky Derby, Singularly enough, it was Derby Day at t Churchill Downs in Louisville last Saturday [ which centered early and immediate atten-id tion on the forthcoming Lincoln Fields 5 meeting. Three-Year-Old Situation Wide Open With the three-year-old situation left wide open as a result of Count Turfs surprise victory in the Derby, Lincoln Fields ; Peabody Memorial Stakes assumes new importance in the sophomore division. The . Peabody, traditional Memorial Day fixture Lincoln Fields, is the first of the im-e portant three-year-old stakes to be run in " Illinois. Ineligible for the Preakness on May 19, Count Turf will be unable to defend his ! title claim that day, so a new contender will come out of Maryland. It is the day r when the Peabody closes for nominations, there is still time for Count Turf and I others to join the list of Peabody candi-i , dates. Nominees whose subscriptions already r have been turned in to general manager . Peter J. ODonnell and racing secretary , Larry Bogenschutz include the four horses . who finished second, third, fourth and I fifth to Count Turf in the Derby — Royal I Mustang, Ruhe, Phil D. and Fanfare. One , these, or some other challenger, may I enhance his division claims by victory in , Peabody, as Billings did in 1948. First stake on the Lincoln Fields schedule is the six-furlong Crete Handicap on Saturday, May 19. This is annually one of important sprint events of the season. Nominations for the Crete closed at mid-l„ night, Wednesday, May 9. With many of the nations leading sta-ie bles, trainers and riders registered, all signs point to one of the best meetings in Lincoln Fields history as the club enters second quarter-century next Tuesday.
