Battle Morn and Yildiz Will Not Seek Preakness Arcaro Now Free to Ride Either Bold or Sonic in Pimlico Stake By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md„ May 10.— The Diamond Jubilee running of the 5,-000 added Preakness, the probable field for which has been questionable since four non-eligibles filled the money positions in the recent Kentucky Derby, is still in a muddle with a bit more than a week to go before the actual running of the mile and three-sixteenths classic. Early this morning, Maryland Jockey Club officials received a call from New York advising that Cain Hoy Stables Battle Morn would not be a starter in the "Triple Crown" fixture, thus leaving Arcaro free to accept another mount in the sophomore event. Shortly thereafter, it was learned that Brookmeade Stables Bold, a galloping winner here yesterday in his seasonal debut, would be a starter in Mondays Preakness Prep Purse and in the Preakness, and that Arcaro would be his pilot. This just about settled the question as far as the veteran Italian booter was concerned, but, still later, it was reported that King Ranchs Sonic could be counted on as a starter in the Preakness, and may be here in time to compete in the Preakness Continued on Page Forty-Three 0. ,0 5 ■ o. 55 50 50 Jet 2t * 0 •5 ro X - r. 50 30 r e r. Once again Arcaros name was in i the limelight when a reliable source from i . New York stated that Max Hirsch, trainer . of the Kleberg horses, had a Preakness call on Arcaro. . Just as he did in this years Derby, and the majority of other stakes races in which 1 he performs, it seems probable that the "I t Ride to Win" author will have his choice of : mounts. To predict just which colt he will select is next to impossible, but it is safe t to say that had he seen the race turned in by Bold in yesterdays Jacobus Purse, he t would lean toward the Brookmeade color-bearer. The Preakness lost a probable starter , . when it was announced that Mrs. Walter ; M. Jeffords Yildiz, winner of Hialeahs J Flamingo Stakes, and more recently injured while prepping for the Chesapeake at Laurel, would not be up to the mile and three-sixteenths by Saturday, May 19. Possibilities also developed in New Jer-J0 sey and New York, where eligibles won sprint races in impressive fashion. At Garden ! State, Sam A. Mason II.s To Market reinjected himself into the three-year-old . picture with a pleasing score, while Fred Hoopers Jet Fleet was a winner at Jamaica to become a possibility. Of the two, To Market seems the most probable partici-W pant. He is expected at the local course ; over the week-end and is pointing for Mondays mile and a sixteenth Preakness Prep Purse. Aside from Bold, To Market and possibly Sonic, Hampton Stables Alerted, winner of the Laurel Stakes, is also scheduled to parade postward in the Prep. He has trained locally since having a rough trip in Jamaicas Wood Memorial and is reported 1 set for a top performance. The Greentree Stables tandem of Big Stretch and Hall of Fame will also be on hand for the "Big One" and is expected to perform considerably better than in the , Derby, in which they were beaten off in I dull efforts. Repetoire, Mrs. Nora Mikells four-time , stakes winner this spring, and a pacemaker r after the first mile of the Derby, is on the - grounds and is scheduled for a slow breeze 5 tomorrow morning. Trainer Al Jensen 1 seems well pleased with his colts condition 1 and feels that the change of racing surfaces . may aid his charge. This opinion is shared by jockey Pete McLean, regular : rider of the Happy Argo colt. Word from New York has George D. Wideners Battlefield remaining a possibil-* ity, despite the fact that he has not raced I for some time and has started but once , this year. Other possible starters are Mrs. • Wallace Gilroys Timely Reward, Ed Las-kers Hull Down, C. V. Whitneys Counterpoint and Mrs. Wideners Knowitall, while I Bernwood, Sir Bee Bum, Anyoldtime, , Fighting Back and Away Away could be in i the field should their respective handlers j make a change of plans.
