Murphy Named Chairman Of California Race Board Presides as Commissioners Discuss Several Routine Cases LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 10.— Prior to the regular meeting of the California Horse Racing Board this morning, Dwight Murphy, who has served as a commissioner for nearly eight years, was named chairman of the board, succeeding Loyd Wright, who recently resigned. The other commissioners, Maj. Gen. Kenyon C. Joyce and John H. Sattler, were both in attendance. The morning session was given over entirely to routine cases. The case of Glen W. Perry, whose application for an owners license had been denied in 1950 for falsification, was taken under submission. J. R. Gregory, who was suspended in 1949 for failure to appear before the board when summoned, appeared and explained that he had been in the hospital then and subsequently. He said that he will later seek a 1951 owners and trainers license which the board will take under consideration. Homer L. Baker, an owner and trainer whose license was revoked in September, 1950, asked to be heard in executive session. The board granted him a hearing. Howard K. Pore, who was involved as a witness in the trainer Engle case in 1948 and was excluded from the tracks for not backing up certain statements he made with names and facts, applied for an owners license and his case was to be reviewed at the afternoon session, at which time the transcript of the Engle case will be read so far as it concerns Pore. The case of Willis Brown, a trainer who was involved in a matter referred to the" board by the stewards at one of the states fairs, was taken under submission. The final case of the morning session was that of John Gagliano, a former pari-mutuel clerk who had been picked up at Hollywood Park on suspicion of bookmak-ing in 1941 and who sued the track, but lost the case. In 1945, after returning from Army duty, Gagliano was granted a license, but the board suspended it in 1946 for falsification of application. In October, 1947, the board issued him a probationary license, but as Gagliano did not make formal application for such credentials until February 16, 1951, the board is taking the matter under submission.
