Already enacted by the House, the measure now awaits Gov. Frederick Paynels signature. The Governor said he was undecided at the moment as to whether hell sign the bill which was sponsored by harness horsemen the state and who claimed that nighttime runners were cutting into their business. The bill, in effect, might end running horse races at Scarborough Downs, the ,500,000 track that had its inaugural meeting last summer. Track officials said that Scarborough Downs lost money during the first half of its 1950 meeting when running in the afternoon, but then switched to night-time operation. If the Governor signs the bill, it would become effective 90 days after the legislature ends — right in the middle of the summer meet at Scarborough. Scarborough could run but only in the day.
