Kosadus Kosadus Tallies Tallies in in Lincoln Lincoln Inaugural; Inaugural; Swift Swift Stakes Stakes Brings Brings Out Out Battlefield Battlefield Meets Nine Foes | At Belmont Park Nullify, General Staff and Jumbo Ready to Tangle With 1 Juvenile Champion of 1950 By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK. Elmont, L. I., N. Y., 7 May 15. — George D. Wideners Battlefield, juvenile champion of 1950, returns to action " in the fiftieth running of the 0,000 0 I Swift Stakes at Belmont Park tomorrow. r. The son of War Relic finished second to o Uncle Miltie in the six-furlong Prospect t Purse at Jamaica early in April, a race e that knocked the winner and Battlefield d out of the Derby picture. Though decisively - beaten in that three-quarters in a 1:10 Vis, Battlefield made a strong bid in n the stretch, but appeared to sulk in subsequent - trials, possibly because he is inclined d to be precociously studdish, and was sent t to Erdenheim Farm in Pennsylvania for a a brief freshening. The change of scene apparently - did something for Battlefields s disposition and the colt has been working g more kindly in recent days. He "will undoubtedly - be a warm favorite in tomorrows - seven-furlong event. Step-Ups to Belmont Stakes Battlefield will pass up Saturdays s Preakness, but if he runs well in the Swift, t. trainer Bert Mulholland expects to start -t him back in the Withers Mile, 10 days s hence, then, possibly, the Peter Pan Handicap, - at a mile and a furlong on June 9, . with the 00,000 Belmont Stakes at a a mile and a half on June 20 being his main objective. All of the 10 in the Swift carry 126 It pounds. The opposition to Battlefield consists i- of Phantom Farms Nullify, Larry MacPhails General Staff, Brookfield Farms Iliad, Vera S. Braggs Nosun, Gus-tave ;_ Rings Platoon a Widener cast-off, J M. F. Drinkhouses Fanellis Alley, Fred W. Hoopers Jet Fleet, Mrs. Tilyou Christophers •I Liberty Rab and H. P. Headleys Jumbo. Liberty Rab beat Battlefield in the Juvenile Stakes here at Belmont Park last year, becoming the first Florida-bred to win a stake on a New York track, but went wrong ** soon after that upset and has been slow in coming to hand. . Nullifly appears to be Battlefields chief Continued on Page Thirty -Five Battlefield Starts In Swift Stakes Nullify, General Staff and Jumbo Ready to Tangle With Juvenile Champion of 1950 Continued from Page One rival tomorrow. This colt won his last start at Jamaica, beating Platoon and finished well in the Prospect Purse to be third, as well as in Experimental Handicap No. 2, then turned in a disappointing race in the Wood Memorial. Last year, Nullify was close to the money in almost all of his races and at one time or another beat most of the leaders of the juvenile division, though able to win only one stake and that because the actual winner Win or Lose, was found to have carried insufficient weight. The son of Revoked is an honest sort and can be expected to do some running in the long stretch. General Staff has been on the sidelines since his poor race in Experimental No. 1, which followed a close second to Repetoire in a minor stake at Laurel. Iliad won at Laurel this season and was one of the better juveniles last year, though only able to win a maiden race. Jet Fleet won an allowance race at Jamaica last week, indicating that he is at least fit, while Fanelis Alley and Nosun have had several chances without success. Faded Early in Toboggan Jumbo could be serious threat, though he faded early in the running of yesterdays Toboggan Handicap in which he was pitted against older horses. Before that, the oversize, but well-made colt was a close second behind Sonic in Experimental No. 2 and finished fourth in the division of the Blue Grass Stakes won by Mameluke. In both of those races he set a hot pace, then went wide at the headof the stretch. The easier curve at Belmont may help the big fellow somewhat. Eddie Arcaro, as usual, will be astride Battlefield, while young Keith Stuart will ride Nullify. General Staff will have the services of Warren Mehrtens and Basil James will be on Jumbo. Platoon will be ridden by Ted Atkinson. Three-year-olds will also be seen in the fifth and seventh races, divisions of the Glen Cove Purse at six furlongs on the main course.
