Braves Trounce Cubs, 9-0; Spahn Hits Three-Run Homer Southpaw Warren Spahn pitched a five-hitter and hti a three-run homer yesterday as the Boston Braves shellacked the Cubs, 9 to 0, in their first game under new manager Tommy Holmes. Spahn, who garnered three hits in four times at bat including a double in addition to his home run, had the Cubs puzzled all the way. He struck out eight and walked only two. Two of the Cubs hits, one of them a scratch single, went to Phil Cavaretta, while Ransom Jackson and Hal Jeffcoat got doubles and Eddie Miksis a single. Meanwhile the Braves had no trouble with the Cubs starting pitcher, Paul Min-ner, or his first successor, Cal McLish. Minner was tagged for a run in the second on a walk to Sid Gordon, who stole second and scored on Willard Marshalls double. Two more counted in the third when Spahn and Roy Hartsfield singled and both came in on Gordons single. That was enough for Minner and though McLish went two scoreless innings, Marshall got this third hit, a single, in the sixth. Sibbi Sisti walked, and Spahn brought them home with his fifth home run in seven years in the major leagues. McLish was touched for single runs in the seventh on singles by Earl Torgeson and Bob Elliott and Gordons fly, and in the eighth on Spahns double and Harts-fields single. Joe Hatten, acquired last week from Brooklyn, finished on the mound for the Cubs, and he too was touched for a run, as the Braves completed their 14-hit attack. Gordon singled, advanced on Ray Muellers infield out, and scored on Marshalls fourth hit in five times at bat. It was Spahns eighth win this season against five defeats. Last year he collected 21 victories and 17 losses. Minner was charged with the defeat, his sixth against three wins. The score by innings: R H E Braves 012 003 111—9 14 0 Cubs 000 000 000—0 5 2 Spahn 8-5 and Mueller; Minner, McLish 4 Hatten 9 and Edwards. Losing pitcher, Minner 3-6. Home run — Spahn 1st.
