After the temporary retirement of Louis s in 1949, the BBBC gave its blessing as s world heavyweight titleholder to Lee e Savold of Paterson, N. J., when he knocked i out Bruce Woodcock, then British and i Empire champion, in London last June. At the same time, Charles was recognized , as champion by the U. S. National 11 Boxing Association. Louis six-round knockout victory over r Savold at Madison Square Garden last t Friday night left the British board without t a heavyweight champion. "Savold defeated Woodcock under cham-5 pionship conditions and was theref #e so _ J recognized," Fane said. "Savold has now v been defeated by Louis and as a conse-lt quence Louis must be recognized by the e board as world heavyweight champion. "Louis has, however, been defeated by 7 Ezzard Charles," Fane continued. "It thus s appears that the present position requires s clarification and for that reason the board , 1 welcomes and recognizes the forthcoming * match between Louis and Charles as a ยป means of determining the undisputed I world champion."
