Summer Cruise Length In Front at Suffolk Downs Lightly Weighted Messina Filly Leads Mestizo and Fiora Home By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 20. — Summer Cruise, a chestnut daughter of Olympic Zenith — Fleet Parade, ! owned by J. J. Messina, made good use of | her 105-pound impost and charged stoutly through the stretch to annex the Medford Purse at Suffolk Downs this afternoon. A ! I length back of the winner, Reynolds 1 Brothers Mestiza was second, a like dis- tance before P. R. Peronis Fiora. Murlogg Farms Fighting Back, installed a 6-5 choice in the eight-horse field, was the victim of poor judgment on the part of jockey Larry Wilson and wound up sixth and well beaten. One of the hottest days of the current meeting prevailed here today. A shirt-sleeved crowd of 9,346 was in attendance and treated to one of the largest daily double pay-offs of the New England season. Thirty-four ticket holders cashed in on the ,106.60 pay-off made possible when E. M. OBriens Mystic Song and G. Colellas If Coming accounted for the first and second races. Jockey Joe Spinale, winning rider of If Coming also scored with Best Degree in the fourth race to take riding honors. Jeep Gypsy and Exemplar went away from the gate in the Medford to make a runaway of the feature. Heads apart for five-eighths of the six-furlong test, the pair at one time were more than seven lengths before the field. Fighting Back, the trailer, attempted to come between horses rather than move out to the outside and was repeatedly blocked. Summer Cruise fared better than the favorite when apprentice Ralph Borgemenke sent her up between stragglers to near the leaders entering the stretch. Once in the stretch, Summer Cruise was steered to the outside and the move paid off as she drew clear and had enough left to forestall the late challenge of Mestiza. v
