. Fourteen Juveniles In Joliet Stakes Happy Carrier, Dean Cayy Coupling Likely Favorite; Mighty Moment Sharp Foe By J. SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondent HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 16.— Fourteen of the more precocious juvenile colts and geldings in the Midwest have been named to contest the 0,000 added Joliet Stakes, the big attraction on tomorrows program at this West Side course. The Joliet, first of the numerous two-year-old stakes presented during the Chicago season, has in the past proven to be one of the most interesting of the Lincoln -Fields added money events and this years twenty-fifth running of the five-furlong dash should not prove the, exception. Included among the entrants are several youngsters who have shown to advantage in stake events carded during the early portion of the 1952 season. Among them are Milton Resseguets Mighty Moment and William H. Veenemans Happy Carrier, winners of the Proteus and Lafayette stakes, respectively. Both will answer the bugle under the equal top imposts of 125 pounds. Veeneman Stable Sends Out Pair Comprising the remainder of the Joliet field are Mrs. M. Veenemans Dean Cavey, who will be coupled with Happy Carrier, the Mikel Farms triple entry of Possess, Absolute, and Instyle, Mrs. Emil Dene-marks Bill Burke, Mrs. Harold G. Bockmans Prince Marque, Reverie Knoll Farms Preposterous, Mrs. O. S. Demings Thaxter, Red Tom Farms New Stream, C and K Stables Speedrite, Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Fiddle, and S. A. Alexanders Sids Pride. Mighty Moment, who won at the quickest possible moment New Years Day at the Fair Grounds course in New Orleans, later registered his first stake success at the same track when he defeated a formidable field in the Proteus Stakes. His success in the added money feature was scored over a muddy strip, which is most likely to prevail tomorrow. Mighty Moment is a member of the first crop of the gray stallion Mighty Story, who was a popular campaigner in the Chicago sector several years ago. In his last start Mighty Moment finished fourth to Hal Price Headleys Aerolite in the second division of the Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland. In that race Continued on Page Five . r* Fourteen Juveniles In Joliet Stakes Happy Carrier, Dean Cavy Coupling Likely Favorite; Mighty Moment Sharp Foe Continued from Paae One the Resseguet colt was forced to lose considerable ground and may have been closer had he had smooth sailing. Happy Carrier won the first division of the .Lafayette in which he scored convincingly over a field of the better youngsters in the Blue Grass area. It is likely he and his stablemate Dean Cavy will rule as the post time favorite. Dean Cavy broke his maiden at Gulfstream in March. He has Been training cleverly since his arrival here from Churchill Downs, and, according to several of the more astute handicappers, is the equal if not the superior of Happy Carrier. The latter has been postward eight times this year and in addition to his success in the Lafayette has annexed one other victory. On only one occasion has he failed to get at least a part of each purse. Jockey John Adams will have his choice of mounts. Mighty Moment will have the saddle services of Doug Dodson. Chief contention to the stakes winners in the Joliet should come from Prince Marque. This strapping son of Haltal, who was purchased at the Keeneland sales for ,300, won his first race at Keeneland last month, then came forth with a smashing performance when he finished second to Ace Destroyer in a division, of the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. Prince Marque appeared to be improving with each race and he should display enough talent in tomorrows dash to prove troublesome. P. J. Bailey will be astride the contender. * Oh Leo Starts in Steger Several of the other starters have had but limited campaigns and due to ill racing luck and other adversities may have not had the opportunity as yet to display their best ability. The Mikel Farm undoubtedly holds a powerful hand in its triple entry. All three of the youngsters were unable to race during the Sportsmans meeting due to the fact that the half-mile oval does not card juvenile races during its early spring meeting, but have been impressive in recent workouts over the local strip. Speedrite broke his maiden at first asking at Churchill Downs, but came back to finish unplaced in a division of the Bash-ford Manor at the Derby course. Preposterous finished second to Sam E. Wilson, Jr.s, Royal Flavor in one division of the Bashford Manor and added improvement from the effort is expected. Fiddle is still a maiden, but reports have it that he possesses high early speeds He is certain to command attention in the wagering interests. Racing secretary Lawrence C. Bogen-schutz arranged an excellent card to support the two-year-old event. Best of the remaining races is the ,000 Steger Handicap. This assigned weight event attracted six thoroughbreds to contest the six and one-half furlongs issue. They are the Mikel Farms False, winner of the Crete Handicap here opening day; James H. Dunns highly regarded Oh Leo, Marion H. Van-Bergs Miss Bobbin, William Hal Bishops Tattenham, Bernard W. Landys Spur On, and Grace Kosibas Is There. All but Miss Bobbin have won one or more races this year. Probable favorites are Oh Leo, one of the better juveniles -f last season to appear in this sector, and False. Spur On returned to winning form at Oaklawn Park and has never been better. Is There and the others have been known to upset calculations when apparently overmatched.
