Cubs Triumph Over Giants, 3 to 2 New Yorkers Held a In Check by Rush Chicagoans Collect Dozen Blows Off Three Huflers; -Umpires Chase Cavaretta NEW YORK, N. Y., May 16 UP.— Big Bob Rush, far faster and sharper than usual, snapped the league-leading New York Giants five-game winning streak by pitching the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 victory today in the first game of a doubleheader. Each player in the Chicago line-up connected safely as the Cubs gathered 12 hits off the combined offerings of southpaw Dave Koslo, rookie knuckle-baller Hoyt Wilhelm and George Spencer. Koslo gifted* Chicago with its first run on a poor throw to the plate in the second inning. After Bruce Edwards doubled with one out and advanced to third on Dee Fondys infield hit, Bob- Ramazzotti bounced to Koslo. Attempting to make a play at the plate, the Giant pitcher threw low and wide to catcher Wes Westrum as Edwards slid safely home. The Cubs scored again in the third on Prank Baumholtz triple and Hank Sauers single to center. Chicago filled the bases in the fifth on two singles and a walk and notched the winning run when Edwards flied deep to Bob Elliott. Don Mueller Homers Don Mueller homered into the upper right field deck in the sixth inning to give the Giants their first run and New York gained its final run in the seventh when Rushs wild pitch permitted George Wilson to score from third. During a squabble with umpires Jocko Conlan and Augie Gugliemo in the seventh, Cub manager Phil Cavaretta and outfielder Gene Hermanski were ejected from the game. The dispute began when, with runners on first and sec6nd and one out, Whitey Lock-man hit a sharp line drive that appeared ticketed for center field and a hit. Rush made a "do-or-dont" pickup and threw to shortstop Eddie Miksis, who relayed on to first base for an apparent double play. But Conlan ruled that Miksis liad missed second base— bringing a swirl of cubs, including Caverretta and Hermanski, about him. Score by innings: R. H. E.
