fe , Imp Handicap Tops Card at Cranwood Six Accept Weigiits*in Race Honoring Ohio-Bred Star; Mad Hare Shoulders 122 By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent CRANWOOD PARK, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, May 16. — A tradition will be born tomorrow with the first running of the ,500 Imp Handicap, honoring an Ohio-bred champion who raced back in the "Gay Nineties," Her lifetime record shows 171 starts and she garnered 62 wins, 35 seconds and .29 thirds, to amass a fortune in those days, of 0,119. Speculation has it though, that she probably earned more than the data shows while racing at tracks where records were not kept. "The Coal Black Lady," as she was affectionately termed by her1 admirers, was by Imp Wagner, out of a Fonso mare named Fondling, and was bred and born near Chilli-cothe, Ohio. The field for the Imp, which is staged at six furlongs, is rather light, as only six accepted the weights assigned by racing secretary and handicapper Fred Burton. In the condition book, it was originally designated for filles and mares, three-year-olds and older, but has been changed for either sex of that age group. Top weight of 122 pounds in the affair has been assigned to G. Y. Bookers Mad Hare, and she will concede three pounds to W. C. Ensors Lovelock with 119. Another four pounds shift is in the A and H Stables Garrymarks favor with 115, and A. W. Messersmiths Fleeting Rock has been allotted 111. The Dorchester Farms Flaming Tera will go postward with 108, and light weight of 107 pounds for the event is .given to H. Seilers Comwood. Ran One-Two in Inaugural Mad Hare and Lovelock finished one-two in the Inaugural Purse opening day. Mad Hare was a length better under the guidance of jockey Louis Olah but both carried the same weight of 117 pounds. The time for the six furlongs was a highly commendable 1:13% and was just one-fifth of a second off the track record. It will be interesting to note which of the two is the more strongly supported in the wagering, and there is a bit of speculation regarding a new track record. Garrymark has had two outings at the meeting and was fourth to the top two in the Inaugural. In his last the Big V. gelding was a two and three-quarters lengths victor while going one and one-sixteenth miles and was on top from start to finish. He picks up one pound off that race but could furnish some competition. Comwood, who is one of the 38 nominees for the Ohio Derby, May 31, will be making a debut at this plant. The red roan gelding, by Trim Comic has an impressive record for this season with two wins and one second out of six starts. The victories were at Oaklawn Park in a maiden allowance and then an allowance affair, at six furlongs, then a mile and one-sixteenth, respectively and with the feathery impost could be the one to fear. The sharp turns may have a great bearing though as he reportedly has a long stride and a wealth of early foot. The Hal Morgan, an allowance test at six and one-half furlongs for three-year-olds and older horses shapes up as an excellent co-feature affair and the eight drawn overnight represent some of the more consistent performers at the meeting to date. Two of those named, Carter and Dohertys Russell Cave and the A and H Stables Safe Arrival finished second and third to Fleeting Rock in their last efforts. According to the conditions. Safe Arrival is in with 122 pounds and Russell Cave has but 116 to carry. Safe Arrival, however, was an easy winner of the. sixth race on May 8. However, J. Levines Boston Hero which is again named to compete was his closest pursuer all the way of the six and one-half furlongs and again a six pounds difference may make a difference. Rounding out the field are R. Keiths Bold J., M. D. Haynes Bobby E.,~A. Steph-ans War Might, S. Cuberkas Fruition and J. J. ONeills Westward.
