Noren Pressed Into Service As Yankees First Baseman DETROIT, Mich., May 16 UP. — Irv Noren, acquired by the Yankees to succeed the departed Joe DiMaggio in center field, became the world champions new first-baseman today. Noren; who occasionally played first base during his two years with the Washington Senators, was pressed into service as the Yankees f irst-sacker because Johnny Mize, Joe Collins- and Johnny Hopp are suffering with minor leg injuries. Manager Casey Stegel said either Mickey Mantle or Bob Cerv would replace Noren in center field.
