G. E. LEWIS — Trainer and part owner of Jack Jr., winner of the McComas Purse. Jack Jr. Scores Popular Churchill Downs Victory [ Knapp Has Mount Better Than ! Length Before Old Mason at End CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 16.— Jack Jr., who campaigns under the silks of J. M. Meyers and G. E. Lewis Winthrop Stable, raced to a popular victory here today in the O. Parker McComas Purse. Sent to the front soon after the start of the mile feature by jockey Earl Knapp, the winner, a gelded son of Bold and Bad and Rhiney GirL beat A. L. Birchs fast-finishing Old Mason by slightly more than a length. A similar distance back, Mrs. Don J. Ramsays Sir Rustom earned third honors, while John Stelles Busy Fox saved fourth money in the field of eight three-year-old entrants. The crowd of over 10,000 on hand this delightful afternoon for the semi-final program of the Downs spring session," sent Jack Jr. to the post favorite at 21 to 10. The Winthrop Stable representative then sped the eight furlongs over the fast track in 1:38. Jack Jr. engaged Busy Fox for the initial six furlongs of the McComas, but finally drew clear from the Stelle representative and established a clear advantage when settled in the stretch. Old Mason then closed in determined style and, although the Birch homebred colt could not get to the top one, he was not under severe pressure to hold Sir Rustom, safe for the place. | Busy Fox was a tiring fourth after his display of early foot. A trio of two-year-old races opened the card; the first of which fell to Wobdley Lane Farms Mr. Majority, ridden by the veteran Willie Lee Johnson. McKay and Sullivans Miss Carrier, with Lois Cook at the reins, won the second, trimming Brown Hotel Stables favored Panache by a head after a hotly-contested stretch duel. Pussy Cat, a homebred Tiger filly from the Warner L. Jones, Jr., stable, drove to a length verdict in the third under a hustling ride from Tommy Barrow. Mason Jennings, choice for the dash and successful in his only other two outings, reached the lead during the drive but was cut down by a rival near the finish and was fortunate to salvage the show award.
